Letter from an Astronomer—The Planet Mars : W Silver Beams—The Weste 8 Lovely Apple-Green—Exquisite rm,m-i;-ma of Crimson, Orange and, Yellow—A Wendrous Celestial Pageant. ' [Correspondence of the New Yerk Sun.) Having, by a most fortunate circum‘stance been in a situation most favorable for yiewing the remarkable display of the Aurora Borealis on last Thursday evening, I send you an account of the phe_momenon as I witnessed it, with the im- - pressigns which this great light made upon me. i Ag-the wondrous exhibition was going | ony I eonld not help'being impressed with | the thought that while the letting off of n few paltry squibs and rockets of human | - manufacture is° always preceded by an- | nouncement and preparation, and the | show when it does take place is.viewed by admiring and anxiously-waiting multitudes, the. incomparable display of heav en’s fireworks at which I was gazing had | begun, without notice or warning, before the twilight had faded, and bad expend«l its greatest brilliancy before the attention of the /dull world had become fully dirccted to its wonders. £ To those who happened to be, as we were, in a commanding position, from whence a view of the whole of beaven’s - domecould be obtained, how awe-inspir-ing was the tender magnificence of the scene which silently developed itself in the firmament ere the noisy clamor of the day had ccased, and béfore the darkness . had settled down Sufficiently to call the attention of even habitual observers of the usual beauties of a clear, starry niglit. Then it-was, a 8 we looked up to the zenith, where the planet Mars wus beginning to glow in the pale blue-green of the twilight sky, we observed faint lines us of thin vapory clouds running from the north and west towards the zenith. 'Spon the white streaks increased in number infinitely, rising up in all direc tions from the horizons, and forming a fan-like corona around Mars, which gazed down like the all-seeing eye through the glorious canopy. Suddénly pulses and waves of soft light would tremble and shiver through the sky, breaking the clectric beams into new form, fading there and brightening here, undulating with a perfect music of motion. Then, while the northern sky was of a-pale white and the western horizon of the loveligst l'apple-%l‘een, broad flushes of the most exquisite pink moved up in the heavens, ‘ changing to lilac, and decpening at times to crimaon, while simultaneously were seen belts of rich orange and yellow. . Glorious beams of light shot up at inter-- ' vals from the north, and almost from all: - points of the horizon; broad fans of the _electric clouds filled the air witha faint - brilliancy. ~ The wondrous pageant kept incessantly changing; it was all motion, all variety, white light alternating with the most exquisitely-toned and richest .colors. / ? o And all the wondrous display ‘guing on in perfect silence; no noise or cracking ; no cxplosion or thunder; all done so grandly in' the sublime stillness which reigns in the infinitude of the universe. Such a scene was indeed enough to raise the grossest soul to joyous adoration. At about eleven o'clock there was a second display, moere beautiful for the brilliancy of the white light, but not showing the colors wliich so' rarely accompany- the Nortliern Lights in this latitude. The -electric clouds took the forms of several of the great nebulew, ‘thug presenting those remarkable objects, as it ‘were, on an enormous scale, an effect truly beautiful and wonderful. SixTEEN years ago Rev. John Maffit, then in his prime, delivered a lecture which closed with the following fine passage;s ° o A “The Phonix, a fabled bird of anti <quity, when it felt the advancing chills of ~ age, built its own funeral urn, and fired his pyre by means which nature’s in~atincts taught it. All its plumage and -its form of beauty became ashes; but then ‘would rise the young—Dbeautiful from the urn of 'death and the chamber of ‘decay would the fledgling come, with its eyes turned toward the sun, and essaying its dark veélvet wings, sprinkled . with gold and fringed with silver, on the - balmy air, risinfg a little higher, until at length, in the full confidence of flight, it gives a cry of joy, and soon becomes a - glittering 'speck on the bosom of the eerial ocean. Lovely voyager of earth, bound on its heavenward journey to the sun! 8o rises the spirit bird from the - rdins of the body—the funeral urn which its Maker built, death fires. So towers " away to its home in the pure element of spirituality, intellect Phoenix, to dip its groud wings into the fountain of eternal liss, So shall dear, precious humanity survive from its ashes of the burning world. =Bo beautifully shall the unchanged soul soar within the disc of - eternity’s luminary, with undazzled eye and unscorched wings—the Pheenix of immertality—taken to its rainbow home, and cradled on the beating bosom of eternal love.” b
