.TREES AHOUXD BARNYARDS. . Much attentioa has been paid in j our valuable paper lately to the management and cultivation of fruittrees. The subject is one of importance, and one worthy of your consideration, as well as of more attention among the farmers than it generally receives. j0w, Messrs. Editors, I am willing to do what I can w call more attention to this subject, and would therefore suggest a plan in which a few dollars might be profitably invested by every farmer who has a barnyard; it is this, to set out as many apple or other fruittrees around the barn and yard as the room will perfllitl ! ' ' Trees so planted will soon throw out their roots under the barn and yard, where they will find an abundaI1ee of nourishment, which has soaked downward from the surface of the yard, and which did they not nave, could not be made available in any other way. In consequence of their proximity to the yard and barn, they will not need any manuring or further attention, save to protect them from cattle, till they get out of their reach, which they will soon do, and come into bearing. The fruit from trees so planted is large and well developed, and they almost always hang full. One of my neighbors who has a row of apple-trees on one side of his yard, has two trees of the same kind; the one near his yard and the other some distance oft"; the one near it produces apples of twice the size, and more than four times the quantity of the other. My neighbor's trees are about sixty years of age, and the largest I have ever seen; a number of them are about eight feet in circumference, at a distance of four feet from the ground, with a distance of sixty feet across them through the heads, and are still growing vigorously. It is also a great advantage to a yard to have trees around it, especially in winter, as they do much toward breaking the cold winds, and preventing much suffering among the cattle. I hope that those who feel disposed will try it next fall, as the outlay is so small and the result so sure, that I doubt not they will be satisfied, and an additional attraction be given to the old homestead. Massachusetts Ploughman. - TERRIBLE RAILROAD DISASTER , Pittshukgh, Sept 2. A terrible railroad disaster ooccurred last night at 8 o'clock on the Allegheny
Valley Railroad, near Ilutton's, 1 2 miles above Pittsburgh. The Kittanning train, coming down, stopped at Caventum and hitched to a car containing a large party returning from a camp-meeting. When the train reached the point mentioned, the Caventum car was thrown from the track by the breaking of a cross bar connecting the brakes. The car was rolled down a steep embankment, turning over twice. At the first revolution the roof was torn off, and the passengers were scattered over the ground, mangling the todies of some terribly. ' - Miss Mary Ann, daughter of J. F. Kincaid, of this city, was instantaneously killed. A large number were more or less injured. Jno. Rockley, skull fractured; J. M. McCleary, amis broken. Among those slightly injured are Mr. and Mrs. Kincaid; Mrs. R. Donaldson; Mr. and Mrs. Carver; Mr. and Mrs. John Slidell; Mr. and Mrs. James Wright and daughter; Mr. and Mrs. Loeman; Mr. and Mrs. Meyer; E. Heazelton; Dr. John Perchment; Mrs. KaufFman; H. Lynch; Mr. and Mrs. Mair. . The killed and wounded reside mostly in Pittsburgh and vicinity. They were brought here last night. ... The Coroner's inquest held over the body of Miss Kincaid exculpates the Railroad company and employees from blame. - : ' Great Falling off in Emigration. For the first time in the history of emigration to the United States from the British Islands, there is now a prependerance in the movement towards Australia and Canada, over that towards these shores. The official returns made up in England, show that for the first three months of 1858 the aggregate number of emigrants from Great Britain was 19,000, of whom only 8,200 were bound for the United States, against 16,726 for the corresponding period of 1857. Of the rest, 9,867 were bound for the Australian colonies. This must bo very satisfactory news for that political party that has such a disrelish to foreigners, particularly as it is connected with this other fact, that the emigration here from all parts of the world has not been at so low a figure for fifteen years past as it now is. ; . . ' It attained its maximum figure in 1853, when it reached 372,725. This was reduced to less than onehalf in 1857, when the emigration only reached some 1 80,000. The commercial difficulties that have affected all classes of our people within the last twelve months have co-operated with other causes, some of them of a permanent nature, to check the influx of emigrants ; so that we should not be surprised if the full returns for the year 1858 would show an aggregate emigration of less than a hundred thousand. This will little suit the interests of our farmers, employers and land speculators in the distant territories. N. Y. Herald. .' ..... CS" Money continues to rule at 3 a 4 on call, and 4 a 4 for short dated good paper. At these rates the demand exceeds the supply : to place a large amount the lender would probably be obliged to take something less. The course of the stock market during the week has been upward. Early in the week a friend of the Erie direction met Mr. Moran and brought about one or more interviews between that gentleman and Mr. Corning, of the New York Central. . The result was the settlement of a basis of negotiation ; namely, the restoration of the old freight tariff on both roads.. , It was, of course, understood that this preliminary understanding should be submitted to the respective boards of direction, and that until they passed upon it, nothing further should be done.' It was in effect submitted to the Erie direction on Thursday, and by that body re-committed for consideration to their Executive Committo, who will shortly report. The Presidents of tne rennsylvama Uentraf and the Baltimore and Ohio are expected in town this week, when it is believed that they will unite with the Erie and Central in a general convention with regard to the tariff of rates for the future. It is possible, however, that difficulties, which a careful studv of the nosition will snnn hrinnr tn light, may yet intervene to prevent the restoration of narmony between these roads. . In the meantime the talk of peace and a cessation of cut-throat rivalry has given new courage to the bulls, who have been very active in purchasing all the speculative stocks at an advance. So far as the commission brokers can tell, the public are entirely disinterested in the rise ; no outsiders of any consequence are taking the least part in the movement. N. Y. Herald. Useful Hints to Young Men. How many young men ignorantly deny themselves a fortune! There is scarcely a young man of good sense in this Clty who cannot save $100 easily from his annual atnings, and, if he will forego cigars, billiards and ju'.ePs, he can save double that amount. . Figures some""les produce almost incredible results. Thus, for instance, if a young; man, upon his twentieth birth-day, invest $100 in any stock paying ten percent., nd annually thereafter will invest the same amount, and the accumulation of interest, he will be worth, hen he is thirty years old, $1,753 ; when forty years 6,300 ; when fifty years old,$18,150; when sixty years old, $48,700. How simple, then, is the plan by which a youth of the present day can pass his old age in comfort and luxury, "o has only to regulate his expenses so as to save one hundred dollars each year from his income. If the amount saved be larger, then the sum total will be increased in the same proportion. Only think of it, that $500 Faved annually, and invested in ten per cent stock, will amount in forty years to $234,500..- One million invested in the same way for ten years will amount to $2,593,G00 ; in twenty years to"S6,726,S00 ; in thirty years to $17,384,658; n forty years to $45,250,838. No wonder, then, that 'ie Rothschilds have amassed such boundless wealth.
