GORRESPONDilNT'S TRAIN. - por tte L0comotive. AN ALLEGORY. DEDICATED TO "A STRANGER" OF ST. MART'S. . ' A pilgrim once, in a sorrowful mood, Was groping his way through a dismal wood. On the chilly air not a sonnd was heard, Save tho mournful notes of a croaking bird. . . ' Not a star above cast its faintest ray . i The pilgrim to cheer on his lonely way. 'Twas mid-night's darkest and dreariest hour, And the gloom was felt in its fearful power. Not very serene was tho chain of thought That the gloomy wood to the pilgrim brought. : Tho darkness around and the dubious way Were types of the sorrows that held their sway . In his cavernous heart, whence joy had fled, And in which all his hopes seemed cold and dead. Alas, tho pilgrim was a dupe, I trow He once had believed in a maiden's vow 1 'Tis a maxim old, that the darkest night Is sure to bring to the sorrowing wight The best of good luck ere the morning's dawn, ; Giving joy to him who was erst forlorn. Thus, as the pilgrim was wending his way," Hoping and praying for the light of day, ' Ho suddenly from his reverio woke, For a startling scene on his vision broko; A beautiful cloud, through its fleecy white, Bevealed to his eyes an angel of light, Who thus discoursed to the grief-laden knight : : " Heaven's richest blessings be Thine in nil eternity, Is tho prayor of one who would Make thee happy if she could I" The pilgrim, ainaz'd, looked up at the sprite That stood on her throno of beautiful white. The truth that ho saw in her heavenly glance, Held his awc-struek sonl in worshipful trance ; The darkness was gone, and the gloom profound, Had loft enchanted on fairy ground ! Then, in falt'ring tones of rapturous bliss The pilgrim broke forth in a strain like this : "Spirit, of beauty, from realms above, Radiant type of my purest love, Goddess or angel, whate'er you be, I know that thou art all purity. I swear by thy throne of fleecy white, . " By thy love-lit orbs of heavenly light, And by my hopes in eternity, ' ,- Never to love aught in life but thee !" Nevermore, since that hour of joy and light, When the pilgrim beheld the beauteous sprite, Has his soul been bow'd in sorrowful mood, 'Mid the darkness and gloom of a dismal wood. Relased from his sorrows and grief profound, He dwelleth in bliss on enchanted ground ! .
Washington, D. C, March 4, 1S58. GIVE US A FOUR MILE COURSE. Mr. Editor : If we have not enterprise enough among our capitalists to build up a manufacturing and business city, let the citizens, through the Council give us, at least, a beautiful and attractive one, one that shall be sought for as the home of ease aud pleasure. Let the streets and grounds be improved and ornamented. When the city was laid out, we are told in the Directory, it was platted a mile square, bounded by four wide streets, 90 feet, with a view to a four mile drive by pleasure parties, and others who might seek such enjoyment. The streets were named, North South, East, and West. Now, if these four streets were graded and graveled, they would afford a pleasure drive, not 'surpassed by the Mexican Plasseo, and in which a general view could be had of almost the whole of the city. Shall it not be done the ensuing summer ? Are not the people public spirited enough for this ? Comfort. THE LAWRENCEBURGH BRANCH BANK." Some writer in the Cincinnati Commercial comes down upon the Lawrenceburgh Branch of the Bank of the State of Indiana, for refusing to redeem her circulation in gold. It seems that on the 26th of February, Geo. S. Wright, of the firm of Geo. S. Wright & Co., Cincinnati, presented at the counter of the Lawrenceburgh Branch $11,186 of the notes of the branch, and was informed by the Cashier that he would only receive and redeem tho notes one at a time. We quote from the Commercial : The Bank claimed the right to redeem her notes one at a time, on the ground that each note was a separate contract with the people. Mr. W. contended that the signing of the notes was no contract with the people, but the issuing of the same was the contract, and that said Bank issued her notes in amounts to suit her own convenience, in sums from $5 to $10,000 ; consequent ly, on her own ground, she -would be expected to redeem in amounts as presented. In this view of the case, the Bank concluded to redeem in amounts as presented, but still insisted to force the holder to take adulterated silver coin in redemption, which is from 1 to 1 J discount in New York. $500 were handed the Cashier by a notary and American Gold demanded, $40 of which was tendered in gold and the balance, $460, was tendered in new silver coin. The change was refused by the notary, and gold, or its equivalent, still demanded which was blankly refused. The notes were then demanded and the cashier refused to give them up. The silver was left sprawling over the counter as the cashier had taken pains to spread it on delivering it upon the counter. Mr. W. then demanded the balance of the notes he held redeemed in gold, and was answered by the cashier that he would redeem them in what he pleased, but would not promise gold or its equivalent Mr. W. then ordered the package of notes sealed, and told the cashier that when he redeemed them after that, he would redeem them in gold and pay the 1 2 per cent interest according to the charter of the bank and that the notes could be found at the office of Geo. S. Wright & Co., informing the cashier also that they should proceed to wind up the bank as in case of insolvency, as arrangements were beinomade to commence a suit in the United States Court against the bank, to force her into liquidation. The notes under seal were taken up in gold on the 27th inst., at Geo. S. Wright & Co's office together with the $500 sil ver and gold left laying on the counter of said bank, which laid there subject to the will of any that pleased to claim the same." Small Fregiht.
