CORRESPONDENT'S TRAIN. For tho Locomotive. LOVE. BY MAltY LYNN. . - I sat alone amid my ruined hopes, That round me lay as some bright Summer buds Tho Autumn frost has touched, and left to die ; I, musing, dreamed of all the friends that Death, - Or time, or distance, from my side had drawn ; )f all the early joys my heart had felt, Now passed away to make it throb no more; And as I mused, the anguish of my soul Bent lower my bowed head, and o'er the past, . 1 wept such tears as misery only weeps. But while thus lone I sat, and dark despair His gloomy wings was closely folding round, From out the skies there gently floated down, And, singing as he came, a snow white bird, That nestled to my heart and with a gush Of melody that thrilled along its chords, As angel notes across tho harps above, He sang my soul to quietness and peace. And as he sung I felt my heart grow warm, And chill despair his gloomy pinious spread, And frightened fly before that bird of light. And still he sung ; and round mo shone a light That seemed to conic from out the upper blue, So pure it was, of so celestial gleam, Around mo sprung gay, blooming (lowers, and earth Seemed to have taken back her Eden glow Of loveliness, and her first holy joy. And Mill he sung, and in my heart I felt . All doubt, and tear, and evil passions hushed, And holy thoughts to enter there and rest New hopes were budding up within my soul, And glorious dreams of happiness were mine And still he sung, and he has sung for years, And I have drawn him closer to my heart, When grief, or anger's billows round mo ro3e, And the sweet song that burst along the waves, AVas like a " peace, be still," upon their ire, And slow retiring, they have left my soul Alone with all its evil passions hushed. . And still that bird is singing in my breast, And may he sing, until my warm life blood Grows chill, and then, oh I may he bear my soul Up to his home, up to the home of love. . For the Locomotive. LETTER FROM AVELLS COUNTY. Bluffton, Ind. Feb. 13, 1858. Ed. Locomotive : AVill some items of ' things' in this 'wooden-country' section of tho State interest your readers? ,AVe are not far removed from the lynching operations of the Regulators still nearer some of the operations of the gang of depredators of whom they so wrongly labor to rid the country. AAre say so wrongly labor with reference to their lynching operations. Our own county has, for some months, been awaro of the presence of an organized gang of counterfeiters and horse-thieves, and many efforts have been made in a legal way to dislodge them. The scene of their operations has been chiefly in and about Newville, some four miles up the river from this place. Some arrest were made over a month since, one of a Dr. Freeman, a skillful physician but of suspicious character, another of a AVm. Ileadly, a real dare-devil looking and daredevil scamp. Dr. Freeman was acquitted on preliminary examination, but Ileadly was bound over to answer. . On the 8th ultimo, a highly respected citizen of Newvilie, M. T. Murphy, left home to go some three miles into the country, and two days afterwards was found in a piece of woods through which his business led him, most foully murdered. This wrought up that community to the highest pitch of excitement, suspicion was fastened again upon Dr. Freeman, and propositions to lynch him were only prevented from being carried into ctTect by the noble exertions of one or two citizens. He was, however,-arrested and bound over to answer at the term of the Circuit Court which closed with last week. . This term of the Circuit Court found Judge Dawson, recently appointed vice Judge Wordan, (appointed to the Supreme bench) presiding, and this becomingly indeed. There were indictments found against one Turner for larceny, against Ileadly for counterfeiting and larceny, and against Dr. Freeman for murder. Turner was sent to Jeffersonvillc for one year. Ileadly plead guilty, for his case was hopeless, and was sentenced to seven years. There was not time to try the Dr. and a continuance was had. I am reminded of an amusing discussion between two small school-girls, as to the Dr.'s guilt. One affirmed he was guilty, the other he was not. Here was an issue. The proof adduced was by the one affirming, that; "My father said ho was .guilty, and he won't lie for lie's a preacher." This may have seemed conclusive to the other at first, ut she was ready-witted, her father is a popular Jusice of the Peace. " I don't care," she replied, " my father says he's not guilty, and he's just as good a preacher as your father for he marries people." And here they both 'rested.' We are about a degree North of Indianapolis. This effects vegetation I suppose, but it is not otherwise perceptible. AVe have excellent sleighing, and oh 1 what fun ! Think of it ! Seated in a comfortable cutter that is, one scarcely wide enough for two behind a 2.40 nag, beside the muffled form of a blooming maiden, it is a taste of glory to go sleighing on the plank road 1 ' Ga-lang !' you proudly say, for you feel like an Antony beside a Cleopatra. Jehu I how cold the breeze, but never mind I is not your heart warm with ardent passion 1 Turn your gaze upon the face beside v you and feast upon its beauty. AVhat 1 tears in her eyes I And is she then so grateful to you for giving her a sleigh-ride ? You are about exultantly to say more fiercely than hitherto, " ga-lang !" but her always sweet voice now chatters. "Jeminyl how the cold makes my eyes water 1 But never mind, she's grateful to you even though the water in her eyes is not tears of gratitude. Turn again to the lovely face alas t it looks as blue as a beet, particularly the nose ! Again the soft voice chatters. " Jeminy 1 1 can't stand this ; let's go back Jake." You go back, and by the time you have arrived home, you are ready to conclude your ride has not been such a triumph as you had anticipated, and this you do conclude an hundred times before your almost frozen finders, toes and face are warmed. This 'snap' of cold weather is pretty severe here. I think last Wednesday morning, the 10th inst., was the coldest. On Thursday, the 11th, I examined a thermometer at 6.30 A. m. and found the mercury 2 below zero. But it will not continue long, they say. I was glad to meet James S. Brown, Esq., of your city, in our village last week ; an Indianapolitan searcely ever finds his way so far through the woods as to this place. Jim seemed, so far as he was visible amid the shaggy covering which adorns his face, in excellent health and spirits. If this letter have any interest, and I can at any time get up a like or better one, I will send it to you Trulyjours, G. S. B. ' Ladies on Skates. Two or three ladies were seen on skates on Friday and Saturday, and made a magnificent appearance. AVe say magn'ificent, for no where, except perhaps, on horseback, does a lady look nobler, more beautiful, more captivating, more positively " killing," than upon skates. A letter to the St. Louis Democrat from Lawrence, Kansas, dated the 6th, says of the new Capital : " The recent act of the Legislature in 'permanently' locating tho Territorial Capital at what is called 'Minneola,' is receiving a great deal of ridicule. There is not a single building of any kind on the town site of Minneola. It is right out on the green prairie, twenty miles south from hero. Under the provisions of the hlx the functions of the government are to be performed there from and after March first. The Legislature was elected purely on a free Slate issue. No one dreamed it was to permanently locate the Capital. Nearly half the Territory is unrepresented in it. There is a movement in New York toward investigating the affairs of certain bogus charitable institutions. The New York Express says: There is no doubt that many of tho institutions, socalled charitable, are in need of a thorough airing. AVe have heard of one case where a certain aid society collected $1,250, and before any body was assisted paid $1,200 as a salary to the Corresponding Secretary, who undertook tho management and did the begging, and, in fact, was tho whole society himself. A cotemporary mentions a society, very useful in its ob jects, that paid its agents twcnty-fivo per cent, for collecting funds ; and another society, now happily ex tinct, that collected 20,000 in one year, and exen(lou ninety per cent, of it before any of it reached the end for which it had been donated. Dr. Roback Dear Sir : Having been afflicted with neuralgia or rheumatism for the past year and a half, and having seen your medicine, called the Scandinavian Blood Purifier, highly recommended bv gentlemen with whom 1 am acquainted, 1 was induced to try it, but not before I had used various other med icines.
