PROCEEDINGS OF THE CITY COUNCIL Monday, April 9, 1855. Council met. All the members present. On motion of Mr. .Colley, Dr. Dunlap took the chair. . . . The object of the meeting was to consider the gas question. Mr. Maguire stated that as the posts were nearly all erected, ' in streets where the pipes were laid, and as the city was legally bound to light them, he would not call the ordinance up at this time. ; His object being, as he stated, to suspend the ordinance, so that an ar- ' rangement could be made with the Gas Company to extend pipes through streets where they are ' HQt now laid. A number of bills and accounts were presented and allowed. On motion of Mr. Jones, the Street Commissioner was directed to clear the gutter in front of block 71, on Maryland street, so that the water can pass. On motion of Mr. Maguire, the Street Commissioner was directed to clear the culvert across Washington street, on Illinois street, so that the water can pass. On motion of Mr. Maguire, the Fire Engineer was directed to report at the next meeting the condition of the Cisterns, how many are under contract, and how many hold water. On motion the Council adjourned. &g See the cut and advertisement of a Corn Planting Machine, in another column. The recommendations from Ohio, accompanying the Machine, are ample and satisfactory. Look at the Machine.
The Wheat Prospect in the "West. We learn from a gentleman who has traveled pretty extensively through the States of the North-west during the past six weeks, that the prospect of the wheat crop was never better. In Iowa a large quantity has been sown, but so great is the immigration to that State, and so rapidly did it fill up last season that a large portion of the surplus will be required for the new settlers there and in Kansas and Nebraska. Throughout Illinois, it is represented that the crop never looked better. The high prices of the last few years, and the almost certainty that there will be little abatement during the present, have stimulated the farmers to sow to an extent beyond former precedent. And the same may be said of Wisconsin. The prospect there is that the abundant crop of last year will be succeeded by one equally as good as this. We hear good reports, too, from Indiana and Michigan. On the whole, if no untoward event interposes between now and harvest, the Northwest which is, in fact, the granary of the Union will turn out a surplus which will gladden the hearts of the breadless in our Eastern cities. There will be comparatively few men engaged in the construction of railroads in the West during the present season all the great lines being nearly completed. This will reduce the consumption of non-producers, and cause a large amount of labor to return to agriculture thus increasing our surplus by the operation of two causes. So our eastern friends may look for an active fall business and a full supply of breadstuff's, unless blight or mildew, or some other destroying agent, shall blast the fair prospects of the present. Chicago Dem. jtSTThe greatest event in the annals of the turf took place in New Orleans last Sunday, the 1st inst., over the Mataire racecourse the great match of Richard Tenbrook's Kentucky horse, "Lexington," four mile heats, to beat the best time ever made, for a purse of $20,000. Yesterday morning, Col. John Raine, of the Gait House, received a telegraphic dispatch from New Orleans announcing, in brief, the result of the match, which was won by the gallant "Lexington" in the unprecedented time of seven minutes and nineteen and three-quarter seconds (7.19f.) The quickest four mile heat ever made, prior to this, was run last season by the Louisiana champion, "Lecompte," in which she was the victor time, This was the time "Lex ington" had to run against, which he has beaten most signally. Hurra for Kentucky stock ! We understand that the friends of "Lexington" have offered to bet $50,000 that he can run four miles in seven minutes. Louisville Jour.
The Unfortnnate Ericsson Invention. The Ericsson experiment is at an end. The invention is conceded to be a failure, and poor Ericsson is a ruined man. He has spent all his' fortune in building his caloric ship, and in the experiments he has made on the vessel. He has done more, he has spent all his wife's fortune, which was great, and she too is beggared. But the worst of all is, that it has led to such a recrimination and alienation that they have separated, never to be united again perhaps. Had lie been successful, his name would have been enrolled with that of Columbus, Newton, Fulton, and other men of illustrious renown. But he has failed; he has lost his all; he has introduced ruin into a once loving and happy home, and the world cooly looks on, and says, "I told you so." Boston Jour.
