PKOCEEDINGS OF THE CITY COUNCIL. ,,. Monday, March 10, 1855. Council met. All the members present cxcept Mr. Coaz. ' Bills and accounts were allowed amounting to ; $52,36. " " The Civil Engineer reported that he could not effect a contract with the Gas Company for lighting the streets, said company refusing to contract on the conditions imposed by the Council. The matter was referred to the Judiciary committee. On motion of Mr. Graydon, 'he Engineer was 1 directed to have the sidewalk in front of the Invincible Engine house graded and paved immediately, and a bridge placed across the gutter in front of said house. Mr. Pitts offered a resolution to have the alley " between the Western Liberties Engine house and Washington street planked, to enable the company to get out and in with their machinery. Adopted. On motion of Mr. Gowan, a resolution to erect . a room for the Western Liberty Fire Company, ; adjoining their Engine house, to hold their meet- . ings in, was referred to a select committee. . ;,' A good deal of discussion was had about a resolution directing the Street Commissioner to !have the gutters on Washington street cleaned out at the city's expense. It was finally adopted ;by directing that it be done at the expense of the owners of property along the street. On motion of Mr. Jones, the' Street Commissioner was directed to plank the gutters on Illinois street, at the crossing of Louisiana street. .. Mr. Pitts offered the following: ' Resolved, That it is the opinion of this Council, that the removal of a Councilman from the ward for which he was elected, and his ceasing to be a -resident'of such ward, operates as a vacation of his office of Councilman. Referred to the Judiciary Committee, with instructions to report an ordinance. The Engineer was directed to advertise for -proposals to build a bridge across Pogue's run, on Noble street, and also on the canal on Vermont and Georgia streets. , Mr. Colley offered a resolution directing the Judiciary Committee to report an ordinance to change the time of the police going on duty to candlelight and remaining until daylight, and that the pay be increased to $1,75 cents a day. Laid on the table..

On motion the Council adjourned. JSSTThe young ladies of the Madison High School Lyceum have started, and carried to its third number, a very handsome little sheet called the Lyceum's Offering. It is edited by Misses Mary J. Page and Lydia T. Anon, and very creditably edited too. They thus humorously lament the intrusion on their editorial dignity, and the interference with their editorial labors, ' of teachers who insist on exacting from them the obedience of scholars : , ' ".The duties of editors and of scholars, sometimes interfere. How provoking to be 'kept in' when the labor of writing editorial presses heavily upon the mind, and intrudes itself continually. One moment something that would look well in print presents itself for contemplation, and the next, an unlearned Philosophy lesson casts its ugly shadow upon us. Why is it that we cannot so impress our teachers with our dignity that they dare not, for fear of public exposure, keep us after school, to recite review lessons?" .' They offer their paper for a year to anybody . who will furnish a poetical solution of the following enigma : . " There is a word of plural number, A foe -to peace and human slumber, Now any word you chance to take, By adding s you plural make ; ' ' ; But if you add an s to this, , How strange the metamorphosis . Plural is plural then no more, ' And sweet what bitter was before." As we never made a rhyme in our life, we can't comply with the "poetical" condition, but .we furnish the solution in plain prose, at a discount of fifty ' per cent., on the original proposition, which we think about fair. Now, Timothy, don't you think we are entitled to the other fifty per cent? -' . Marble Quarry. We have frequently alluded to the marble quarry on the line of the Evansville and Indianapolis railroad, in which some of our citizens are interested. This quarry is now open, and in successful operation, and some of the stone has been shipped to this city, via the Terre Haute road. As our builders are interested tin whatever interests the city, we copy the following account of the works from the Gosport Cironotype : 1 ' The quarry is about' three hundred yards long. A small never-failing spring branch runs through the centre. The rock rises on either side of the valley to a height of from twenty to forty feet, and lies exposed to view in layers from ten to twenty feet in. thickness, without a seam, It is composed of three qualities, the finest lying on top. This is a fine marble of beautiful color, and takes a fine polish. The second quality is a building stone, unsurpassed in beauty of color and durability, underlying the marble. The third quality, as fine a building stone as commonly used, is at the bottom. A great advantage of this quarry over any other of which we have any knowledge, is that the best stone is on top ; the second quality next, and that all lie exposed, and can be taken from the quarry without the heavy expense of stripping. , The company who own this valuable quarrv, have, for the last eight months, been engaged in erecting, at great expense, a steam saw mill, to prepare this marble and stone for market. The whole work will be in operation by the 10th of March. The mill house is about the centre of the quarry, and is arranged for six frames each frame capable of accommodating from twenty to twenty-five saws. The engine is twenty horse power. Some of the frames being complete, the machinery has been tried, and works to a charm, the stone from the saw looking as true and smooth as if planed. The company have also erected a boarding house for the accommodation of the mechanics employed. A side track is soon to be made by the N.. A. & S. R. R. Company, for the accommodation of the quarry. Two cranes and a derrick, for-handling the stone, each capable of hoisting twenty tons, are nearly completed, as also tracks for the conveyance of stone to the mill and under the saws The stone is taken

from the quarry, put on (he car by the derrick, conveyed to the mill on a down grade, then with the cranes, (one at each end of the mill,) taken from the first car and placed on another car, adjusted, and then pushed under the saws. After it is sawed it is pushed back, and by the cranes placed on a wagon to be hauled a quarter of a mile to the N. A. & S. road. At the rate the saws cut, the mill will, when in complete operation, at the lowest calculation, turn out each day, four hundred cubic feet of dressed stone. The company intend sawing caps and sills, steps, copings, columns, and stones in all shapes and sizes used in buildings, and their marble into mantels, table tops, Sic., fec. ' ' Dr. Brown, geologist, says of this stone, "some of it has been in foundations in Bloomington for thirty years, the angles and color being as perfect as if from the hammer yesterday." In every respect, an article superior to any made on any other plan in vogue. By the aid of the above improved facilities, and a practical experience of 20 years at the business, we guarantee to our customers and the public.
