Sister, could you giro this young lady five cents ? CsSod morning ; good morning, Miss." And both sisters bow and smile as pleasantly as if we had expended ten dollars instead of one. We have often longed to know something of their history, there is such an air of placid content and innate refinement about them and their little shop ; their very ribbons rustle with an old-

style gentility, as they are folded and unfolded in their soft white hands. And now the carriage rolls beyond what we have always considered the business part of the town, down Tenth street, to a range of low frame houses, each with its narrow window of cheap muslins, and tawdry ornaments ; shops, as the author of the " Charcoal Sketches" has said, "which bring a sensation of dreariness over the mind, aBd which cause a sinking of the heart, before you have time to ask why you are saddened ; frail and feeble barriers they seem against ponury and famine, to yield at the first approach of tlie gaunt enemy. Look at one of them closely. There is no aspect of business about it ; it compels you to think of distraining for rent, of broken

hearts, of sickness, suffering, and death. " It is a shop, moreover, we have all seen the like, with a bell to it, which rings out An announcement as we open the door, that few and far between there has been an arrival in the way of a customer, though it may be that the bell, with all its untuned sharpness, fails to triumph over the din of domestic affairs in the dark little room.

that serres for parlor, and kitchen, and hall, and proves unavailing to spread the news against the turbulent clamor of noisy children. The owner is one of those women you may recognize in the street by their look of premature age, anxious, hollow-eyed, and worn to shadows. There is a whole history in every line of their faces, which

tells of unceasing trouble ; and their hard quick movement, as they press onward, regardless of all that begirts their way, indicates those who

have no thoughts to spare, from their own immediate necessities, for comment on the gay flaunting world. Little does ostentation know, as it flashes by in satined arrogance and jeweled pride, of the sorrow it may josUe from its path ; and perhaps

it is hsppy for us, as we move along in smiles and pleasantries, not to comprehend that the

glonee which meets our own comes from the bleakness of a withered heart, withered by penury's unceasing presence." Ay, it is too true a picture to 6pare one tint one shade of the sombre coloring, for such is the

worn face that tries to smile such a wintry gleam 1 as we arc welcomed, though there is scarcely room to stand, outside the narrow empty counter. And why has industry failed in its reward ? "It is those fairs," the woman tells us speaking bitterly, poor soul 1 and what wonder ? " that kills all our business. Some ladies won't pay a fair price when they can -get things there bo much less, and even think they are giving to charity besides. It's poor charity, to my thinking, ma'am, that takes the bread out of our mouths, and works our hands to the bone. And then they

come here, and bring their work, and we must do it next to nothing, because we can't starve, and

they know it. Some ladies don't seem to have no

conscience, ma'am

But Mrs. Jenkins is not of these ; she has come far out of her way to give out this bundle of plain

ewrog and she will pay a fair price for it, too. "Tlcnow it won'tbe done quite so well," she says

ww wBnaenuaiiT, - out it win wear quite as

That poor soul Used to sew beautifully when she was first d widow, but she set up a little shop for nrusKns and trimmings, as you see, and sunk all he had, because ladies will buy where they can get .things under price, without looking at the justice of the thing. Now she ha to slight her work ; but I never say a word.- I see just how

..JrS m:mkamm : ir - 'JA great deal haY been said and written of kti years, as.to the profit or loss of fanning. P& one side it is contended that a handsome , profit can

be realised oar the", otter, that nothing but a bare living can hs made Now both maybe rieht in a certain sense, and, both wron. Xhe

difference seems to li in the fact that each per

son looks through a separate medium and draws

nis conclusions nccoramgiy. li is naiurai m make inferences ftpm one's Own management, and for this reason we see such a variety of opinions in theagricultural discussions of the day.

To my own mind it is as clear as the noon-day sun, that no buitness is more profitable, in the long run, than farming. I well remember, twenty-five years ago, of hearing farmers say that the most they could do Was to support a family, pay the taxes, and come out about even at the end of the year. With very few exceptions, these farmers hare continued to preach these doctrines

and practice them to the present time. They

claim that when produce is high, the cost of pro

duction is proportion ably increased, and when It! Lo?er,'muic by w

is low that it will not pay to raise it. It is often said that farmers are not as industrious now as they were forty or fifty years ago. We are not willing to assent to this assertion. There were many farmers at that time, who cultivated large farms and made money, but in nine cases out often it was done at the expense and exhaustion of the soil. Now this same class of farmers say that there is no profit in farming in old Connecticut, but that the prairies afford the only locality for profitable farming. Now all this may look very well on paper, but

we are confident in saying that no time, within the last fifty years, has the farming interest become so lucrative in any of the New England States as at present. The good prices, which all

kinds of produce bring in market, is proof of this.

But good management and system are necessary to success. The old skinning and exhausting process may do on the prairies, but it has run the gauntlet here long ago. If farmers intend to " make money," they must keep up with the times, study their business, and adopt new implements and labor-saving machines. Old sayings, old maxims, and old tools, are poor capitals, and I am satisfied that we should make double-the

money if we used greater liberality in our management. We try to live by starving: our busi-

Molucca, or Spice Islands, but has been carried to all the warmer parts of the world, and is large

ly cultivated in the tropical regions of America.

ine nowers are small ia sue, and grow m large numbers in clusters at the very ends of the

branches. The cloves we use. are the flowers

gathered before they have opened, and are yet freen. After being gathered they are smoked y a wood fire, and then dried in the sun. Each

clove consists of two parts, a round head, which

is the four petals or leaves of the flower rolled

up, enclosing a number of small stocks or filam

four points ; and is, in tact, the flower cup, arid the unripe seed vessel. All these carta niav be

distinctly shown if a few leaves are soaked for a
