and the hogs are 10 per cent better than they

ever were Detore. The Madison County (Ky.,) Commissioner re

ports twenty -six thousand hogs over six months

old, m that county, on the 10th of January last. Garrard county as Seventeen thousand head ; Lincoln, Jessamine, Fayette, and other large hog raising counties in Kentucky show the same proportionate increase. 1 We hear but little from Illinois, Iowa and Missouri, but considering the scarcity of last season, it is more than probable that there will be an increase rather than a falling off, as we seldom have two seasons of scarcity together. Throughout Ohio, we learn that more young hogs are oeing fed than usual, "arid in many sections an increase of onethird is anticipated, The high price of pork has caused the farmers throughout the West to bestow as much care and attention upon their pigs as they do upon their children. Throughout many sections of the South, the

planters are making strong endeavors " to grow their own meat" , We hear of contracts by our packers, for the future delivery, of some 20,000 hogs, to be fattened in Indiana, at 3 and cents gross. Several thousand have been engaged by Madison

packers for the next season at 4 and 4 cents net ;

we hear also of various contracts in Kentucky at will cost about $1, 000.

ings going up this season as in past years The following comprise all we could find. Ou Washington street, a three story brick business room is going up, opposite the Court House. It is three stories high, with a stone, cellar, and will cost $1,500. Matthew Little is building a corner to his hotel. It is of brick, three stories high, with a cu-

pola, and contains fourteen rooms and four halls. It will cost about $5,000. This will-finish out the corner, and make it the second hotel building in the city. V-

Mr. Roller, T. Buchanan, C. Ostermeyer, and

F. Ostermeyer, are each building a one-story

frame business room, with stone cellar. The

four will cost about 1,600.

On Delaware street, D. 8. Cress is building a

two-storv brick business house, that will cost

about $600. On Merrill street, John McCollum is building two frame dwellings, of astory and a half m

height, which will cost about 81,000. On Alabama street, south of Merrill, we saw three new frame dwellings two of one story m height, and one of a story and a half. The three will cost about $1,000. Between Merrill and South streets there are

four new frame dwellings, one story high, that

3 and 3A cents gross, to be delivered when fat

tened in the fall. A sale of 1,000 head has been made, delivered here, at 4 cents. One of our principal provision dealers and packers sold 100 barrels of mess pork on Monday, to be made of the next crop, and to be delivered in June, 1853, at $15 per barrel, which is $5 per barrel less than the present prices. The above we believe to be an accurate and impartial statement of the present condition of

the forthcoming " hog crop, and we leave the reader to draw his own conclusion in regard to the prospects of next season. However, we advise buyers to be prudent in time, in regard to making contracts for the next season. This caution will be equally beneficial to the farmer, for, if hogs are brought to ruinous high prices, the farmer becomes equally involved with the specu

lator when the reaction takes place. Cincinnati Price Current. mHm Post Office Envelopes. The post route bill passed by congress contains a provision authorizing the post office department to cause envelopes to be made, with suitable water marks on the paper, identifying them as official, and with sprinted stamp, for single or double postage, with a suitable device.
