ho you needent either , , I am full now I run over ; and they say that I ran over old women, half killed the mother, pulled the doctor hy the nose, and upset apothecaries in the comer, and then didn't I ring the tea bell ? Didn't I blow the horn ? Did't I dance, shout, laugh and cry altogether ? The women say they had to tie me up, I don't belieye that, but who is going to shut his roouth when he has a live baby ? You should have heard his lungs, sir, at the first mouthful of freslrair such a bust ! - A little tone in his voice, but not pain .; excess of joy, sir,
from too great sensation. The air bath was so sudden, you know. Think of all this beautiful machinery starting off at once in full motion ; all his thousand outside feelers answering to the touch of the' cool air ; the flutter and crash at the ear; and that curious contrivance, the eye, looking out wonderfully and bewildered upon the great world, so glorious and dazzling to his unworn perceptions ; his net work of nerves, his wheels and pulleys, his airpumps and valves, his engines, reseryoirsj and all within that fountain, with its jets and
running streams, dashing and coursing through
the length and breadth, without stmt or pause, j making altogether sir, exactly fourteen pounds ! I am this day multiplied by two. I am indefinite series and there is my continuation. And you observe it is not a block, nor a blockhead,' nor a painting, nor a bust, nor a fragment of anything however beautiful, but a combination of all the arts and sciences into one; painting, sculpture, music, (hear him cry,) mineralogy, chemistry, mechanics, (see him kick,) geography and the use of the globes, (see him nurse,) and with all he is a perpetual motion -a timepiece that will never run down. And who wound it tip? But words, sir, are only a mouthing and a mockery. -
, IKE IN THE COUNTRY.
During" the last winter Ike was sent to visit some of Idrs. Partington's relatives, who live on the borders "of the Great Bay. , Squid river, which empties into the bay, is a very beautiful
stream in summer, but in winter it is dreary enough,; yith the tall trees, stript of their foil-j
age, stanamg, as'it were, shivering upon its briijk' ; rlTut , it is a rare skating course from t Moose Village ;to the river's junction with the bay,C,;'V, ike had used up all his resources for fun at thaend of the third day. He had snow-balled thecatti nto a frenzy, caught all the hens in a boxetrapr tied the pigs together by the legs, .sucked ,aU .the eggs he could nd, and was look-
mgjound for something else to do. while the
boys' were at school. He was just calculating, as he poised a snow-ball, how near he could come to a tame pigeon on the window sill without hitting it, when the glass was saved by the
appearance of the house cat outside the sacred
precinct of the kitchen. Ike had watched this cat wistfully ever since he-bad been there, and the cat had manifested a.
strange repugnance to him ever since he trod on her tail aa she lay by the stove. He immediately .seized upon her, and expedients, never want
ing; soon suggested themselves to him.

The same was true of Latin. He could have learned the declensions of the nouns and the conjugation of the verbs as well as other boys of his age ; but his seat-mate Very kindly volunteered to "tell him in class," and what was the use in opening the gate into the Latin language, when another would do it for him ? Oh, no ! ., John Easy had no idea of tasking mental or physical strength, when he could., avoid, it, and the consequence was, that numerous gates remained closed
to him all of his Me gates to honor gates to
nches gates to happiness. Children ought to be early taught that it is always best to help them
selves. Madison ( wo.) family Visiter. The Weeping Willow There is no tree, the sight of which excites more tender emotion in the heart, than the 'weeping willow' It is out of place in a public walk-but looks delightful when flourishing in lunanCeliia'' the borders of some winding stream j or in some secluded spot, which has long been the asylum of solitude and tranquility. It is the emblem of sorrow and de votion, and forms a beaitiful and appropriate ornament to a burying ground." With its dropping
foliage, it appears to be looking back on the past and sympathizing -ifith the afflicted mourners. It reminds one of the things which were and hushes all the angry passions pf the human heart.
Independent of the associations which are inseparably connected with its appearance, there is no tree in our forests which present an aspect more graceful and lovely, or whose branches are more umbrageous. The first weeping willow was planted in England, by the celebrated poet, Alexander Pope. He received from the Levant a basket of figs, and observed one of the twigs, of which the basket was formed, putting out a shoot. This twig he planted in his garden. It flourished. Grew sweet to sense, and lovely to the eye : and from ..this ; parent stock, all the weeping willows, whi?h are, by. no naeans uncommon in England, have sprung. -Boston Journal.
