the river of the same name of the State, a substantial farmer, who, by years of toil, had accumulated a tolerably pretty pile of castings ; owing, as he said, principally to the fact that he didn't raise much taters and unguns, but rite smart of corn. Wal, as we was both goin the same way, me and this feller jined cumpenny, and 'bout noorr, we hitch our critters, an I set down aside uv a branch, and went to eating a snack. Arter we'd got thru, this feller sez tu me : 'Try a drap uv this ere red-eye stranger V 4 Wal ! I don't mind,' sez I ' 'But, War's yure hoss V ' Kumming tu him bime-by, Dad !' So me an this feller sot thar, sorter torkin and drinkin, and then he sez : ' Stranger, let's play a leetle game uv Seven-up,' atakin out uv his pocket a greasy, roun-cor-ne red deck 'uv'kerds. . 4 Don't keer ef I du,' sez I So w.e set up side uv a stump, an kummenced to bet a quorter up, an I was a 4 slayin him awful'l ' ,' But, War's yure hoss V Kummin tu him, Dad 1 Bime-by, luck changed, an he got tu winnin, an pretty sune, I hadn't not nary nuther dollar. Then, sez he;: 4 Stranger, I'll gin yu a chance tu get even, an play you one more game.' 4 Well we both plaid rite tite that game, I sware, an we was both six and six, and ' 4 War's yure hossV 'Kummin tu him, Dad ! We was six and six, Dad, an 'twas his deal '.Will yu tell me War's yure hoss V said the old man, gettin riled. . 'Yes we wo3 six and six, an he turned the jackV 4 War's yure hoss?' . 4 The stranger won him a turning that jack I' . 'Little 'Un.' A Bit of Advice. Laugh at no man for his pug nose you never can tell what may turn up. An Idea. A' Kentucky paper, speaking of the extravagant gestures of some of their lawyers, says they punctuate their words with punches.
Would it not be, asks an erudite editor, an improvement on ' Go it while you're young' to say, 4In the earlier stages of maturity, proceed with accelerated swiftness !'
