company of gentlemen and ladies in attendance; some coming three and four miles &c." This is a falsehood. There was not a man came over a mile ; and as for the ladies, there was none there; neither is there one in the neighborhood that had confidence enough in the fellows who got up the affair to credit a word they said on the subject, although they went to one house.for the express purpose of getting some ladies to attend ; but they were disappointed as they deserve to be, as often as they visit the dwelling of the ladies. But I deem it needless to follow that article further, as there is no truth in it after the first sentence. Now, gentle reader, let me inform you of the whereabouts of those "Nigger melodists." The captain is a house carpenter living on the three
notch road in Marion county, near the south line ; the lieutenant is a beardless youth of some twenty winters living about half or. three fourths of a mile east of where the captain lives, and some other bright youths of Marion county, , who lately moved to . the city, of Greenwood. Now, -gentle readers, you see from this that those "melodists" made a complete water haul, broke their net, and run themselves into the ground, about a feet, a feet and a half, 'or two feet, or such a business. So mote it be. Truth. Mr. Locomotive. As the election of City Councilmen, together. with that of1 Mayor, is at hand, it may not be unprofitable to call the attention of our citizens to that subject. Little as many may have thought about this matter, in times past, it is, all thiDgs considered, unquestionably one of vital conequence to our city. It is idle to expect the adoption of wise and wholesome ordinances from a council whose members do not command the confidence and respect, of a decided majority at least, of the citizens. In addition to the satisfaction enjoyed by the citizens themselves when a good and wholesome government is maintained, it has in the estimation of the intelligent traveler and emigrant the effect of commanding their respect and commendation. Hence the necessity of having such improvements made, from time to time, as necessity and safety demand. Let the people look to it. . Q.

- Advertisements. We now have room for a few short advertisements, to be in a short time. It
is unnecessary to enumerate, the advantages of advertising in the Locomotive it is apparent to all but we will say that there is few persons or families in the city that do not read the Locomotive, and there being but little space devoted to advertising, those that, do appear are conspicuous. Our terms
are at the head of the paper, in such a way that
every person can tell just what it will cost ; for a
short time they are cheaper than in the other pap
ers, but for a long time they are dearer- we do not
care about having advertisements in for a longtime,
as it is a disadvantage to the paper, and no benefit
to the advertiser.

Very Near. A lady was walking down street
on Sunday last, when a gentleman, who happened
to be near, saw a large volume of smoke issuing
from her clothes. He called to her. but she did
not stop, and he then ran up and caught her, and
extinguished the fire. The lady was badly scared
but suffered nothing more than the damage done
her clothes. She must have been sitting near a
fire, and a spark getting on her clothes, was fanned
by the air' when she left the house. A few mo
ments more and serious consequences might have
resulted.
Dr. Harrison's Lecture. On Monday even
ing Dr. Harrison delivered a lecture to a large number of our citizens, in Roberts' Chapel, on the sub
ject of the Asiatic Cholera. The Dr. has a happy
tyle of speaking, and succeeded in riveting the at
tention of the audience during the whole lecture. He treated the subject under the following heads.
1st, its' History. 2d, its contagious or epidemic
qualities. 3d, General remarks on the pathology of
Asiatic Cholera, describing the seat of attack, the
premonetary symptoms, the causes, .dec, Lastly,
general remarks, relative to citizens and individuals
in guarding against, and the course to be pursued in case of attack. With the first three clauses we shall say nothing, as the necessary use of so many
medical terms places them beyond our power to
explain, but of the last, and to us most interesting clause, we would like to give a short description
from memory.
The Dr. fully established that the Cholera pre
vailed in wet or marshy places more than in dry, ( here, in parenthesis, we would call the attention of the Council to the grave-yard pond, a vast fer
menting vat, breeding sickness and death.) That the person should be kept clean by frequent ablu-, tions.. The feet dry. The diet should not be materially changed, except that indigestible articles
be prohibited. That the house should be kept well ventilated particularly recesses and closets. That the mind should be kept calm and easy nothing should disturb it, either excitements of any kind, or
fear of the disease. That the house, cellar and yard should be cleaned out and kept clear of filth, decayed vegetation or anything that would tend to
taint the air. That lime should be scattered freely, in the cellar and yard. That the streets should be cleansed thoroughly, and kept clean, and particularly the alleys. That Laudanum, Camphor, Mustard, Cayenne pepper, Brandy and bricks, should constantly be kept on hand ready for use. That the
premonetary symptoms, or first stages of the dis
ease, must be attended to. by sending immediately
for your physician. These symptoms are lassitude,
debility and weakness," and a slight, a. very slight
diarrhea. - We do think this lecture will do good, in preparing the people for the approach of the Cholera the coming summer. We would like to see it followed by others, either from the same, or other medical gentlemen of this city. " . Keep it in mind, That the committee of the Board of Directors of the Peru. & Indianapolis railroad have petitioned the Council for permission to run their road through East street, and that the Council will meet on the 26th to determine the matter. The granting of this privilege depends entirely on the properly holders along the street it is with them to say whether they shall or shall not run through the street, and we hope they will be awake to their true interests and attend to the mat ter. Consider that you are not deciding for yourselves alone, but for posterity, as the privilege once granted it cannot be taken away. If you do grant permission it will be a precedent for other companies to base their claims on and there is no telling where it will stop. But we would have every man do as he really thinks right.
The Cincinnati & St. Louis railroad bill has
been defeated by the Legislature of Illinois.
