The best roads are those which have not been "improved" at all- This may be a "pair-o'-docks," but it seems to he true. ; ' 1 There are aome roads where some body, surely ithout authority, has merely scraped up the dirt, grass and sod from the side of the road and has left all these in a meandering line somewhere between the two id-s. and the center of the main highway, and the result is exasperating. Then, take the new gravel. There are many miles of road.s where the going was fine, but now it is all de-j atroyed. The best parts of the road ' all through the summer and car'y fall re now the worst. The gravel was placed upon the center of the roadway, and that was natural. Then, another natural thing happened. A rut formed. This rut obtained a certain depth, and then struck bottom, and the giavel was piled up a few high the outt-idc of the rut. This gravel is still upon ;'nc outside of the rut, and it is frojen The fall rains came and there was no chance for the water to get outside of the rut, once it fell there. The result is that the rut is so rough that it is one of the worst causes of cuss words known in these latter days of October and tb first of November. Yet, Uncle Sam expects h rural carriers to drive their autos over these road. If he does, he should bring about some better Method of smoothing roadwavs, or else uiy state should repeal all laws against profanity. Would it not help sonic if the grael Upon the sides of the ruts were scraped to the outside of the roadWay, rather than even to fill the ruts with it? To sav the ha.st, it is bud that a greater part of the year's driving Shall be taken up, fir4, with new
