October .11. G.ncral Cadnrna is fast lining up hi forces for a determined stand against the German and Austro. Hungarian armies along the Tauliamenlu river. Dispatches from the front this afternion declared that the Italian commander is master of the situation now and that he is checking the enem in fffective fahion. Italian cavalry forces continue to harass and hold up advance detacknienis of tiie Germans and Austro-H'ir. Newspapers today point to the fact that the l.rrnur h-tve ceased citing the number of prisoners captured. It is declared that this shows that the Italians have recovered from laeir lir.d panic and that the enemy is not making the progress that thrv did for the first day or two ol the drive. Great confidence is expressed by all of the papers in General (adorna. The gravity of Ihe situation ia not minimized but the writer4 express great faith in the Italian leader's plan of campaign. tH tht IntemQIiimnl tit tfrrrfee.l LONDON, October 31 KrjtIsh losses on Western front in October total M.5..6. it was announced today. The oy: of the world are turned today on ;h Venetian plains in Italy centering on the Tagliamento river, where there is every reason to believe the greatest battle in the history of the war n will be fought. The Teutonic army, already in possessicn of I'dino, today .continued its' march toward the river. Hu ning thetr bridges behind t'nem, exercising a rear guard check to the enemy and fording the swollen stream wherever possible, the retreat is s.,w hut certain. In the meantime British and French assistance is being hurried to the scene of the impending conflict. Everywhere, military authorities ay, the political effect of the enemy's drive is rapidly becoming apparent. The political viewpoint brings out the determination to sU;n.l firm and save Italy. Will Art as Boomerang. Added to this determination is t'i" belief in military circles that the Teuton drive will qot as a boomerang to the enemy. The fire was sti'i burning at several places early today hut it was under control The old immigration hi.ilding. which adjoins Pier 8, was destroyed. The Raltimore & OWe's great grain elevators are only a short distuncc away from the destroyed piers and the firemen's efforts were chiefly directed to keeping the blaze away from these. For a time it looked as though a still northwest wind would defeat their efforts but the flames were brought under control. The British steamer which was lost was the Kerry Rung of the Johnston line. Twenty or mote men jumped into th. water from the steamer, som of them being membera of the crew and others stevedores. It was believed early today that all of these execpt ten had been accounted for.
