October 26th to bf obserTed in the Public Schools Through, out Indiana.

(8 (ft. atWMlMMl JrM ".) INTMANAPOLIS, Ind., October 1. Horace Ellis, state superintendent of public instruction has directed the public schools of Indiana to reconixa the importance of food conservation by devoting special nttention to the subject on Friday, October 26th. School superintendent of Indiana have received a letter from Dr. Ellia which says, in part; "The food situation has become so acute that an extensive campaign must be made in order that the crisis we now fare may be adequately met. I desire therefore to add my official recognition to the importance of the work undertaken by the United States Food Administration, and to give my I hearty approval to the plan proposed by the f ederal Ford Administration of Indiana, to obtain Food Pledge Card signatures through the schools, and to distribute educational Conservation literature through the schools of this state. "Already October 26th has been designated as Conservation Day in the Schools of Indiana, and it is on that day that the schools will end their campaign for Pledge Card signatures." Every Indiana teacher will be supplied with a quantity of pledge cards, which, when signed will be exchanged each for the "Conservation outiit" consisting of the handsome tri-colored wimlow card, the valuable book "Ten lessons in Conservation" and the Kitchen War creed, prepared especially by Mr. Hoover. On Conservation Day in the Schools, there will be special exercises and in many Schools, th. reading of prize essays on "How Food Will Help Win the War," and the culmination of other contests among the children. NEWS STORIES AND GOSSIP FROM THE HOOSIER CAPITAL y III. ler'io(it Stitl Srfc. INDIANAPOLIS, October 10. Political organization workers, for the most part, believe the new registration law has proved a practical failure in Indianapolis. Report, from many politicians throughout the state also show that there is considerable dissatisafction with the working of the law. And in making the statement, Mr. Politician, so murh abused, takes a rap at Mr. (kneral Public. This last named gentleman rants about graft, duty, crookedness of politicians, etc., hut when it cornea to an election it takes the politician to get him to the polls. At least this is what the politicians say. Three wee-j ago the republican city organization was greatly worried. Lew Shank had worked hard .n I had most of his followers registered. The republican managers discovered that a small per cent of the republican voters had registered. It was necessary to call on the precinct committeemen to get voters to register so that they might vote. The democratic campaign managers were up against tbe same thing. The legislature changed the registration from a short registration period because it was said many persons missed their votes by not being able to register on a certain day. It was also decried as an expesiv process. The legislature conscientiously men of both parties represented tried to change the law so that all might register and so that the expense of registration night be lessened. The period was mailt six months and few clerks were provided for. Registration closed on Monday of this week. Mr. General Public had fix months in which to register in cities where it is necessary to register '.o vote in the city election. In Indianapolis, it is estimated that the vote will be below normal, just because the voters have not registered. Some predated the vote would be 5,000 to 10,000 short. Political performers al'o are imer-c-tcd in the showing. Unless the public will go to the polls, it cannot die. tate the rulers. From now on hot political cam paigns will be waged in mnnv citiei. The uppermost issue in most of them ia efficiency in management and the manner of conduct of the mayor after the prohibition law becomes effective
