Wow! Another good one on Smiley. It happened on the 10:22 o'clock car coming from Indianapolis last night. Lee Bratton was returning from a business trip to "the city." and Pearlua got on at Whitestown. When Smiley got on, he saw Lee up toward the front end of the car and decided to go up and ride with him. Accordingly, he went up and sat down in the seat in front of Bratton, which had iU back turned so the men could face each other. As was stated before. Smiley sat down but not for long. He soon discovered to his inexpressible humiliation and chagrin that he had seated himself sjiare!y up"i a big, fat old-fashioned cake, it resembled a pan cake closely when Psrlu arose. The supposed owner of the erstwhile delicacy was the woman sitting in the next seat. Smiley didn't say much all the way home, for once his "goat had been got right." It was not learned what the owner of the lamented cake said or did when she dincovered its condition. .' ,

Klcyd G. rerkins, of the Headquarters company cf the 4th Indiana infantry, writes under date of September 27, from Hattiesburg, Miss,, to his parents as follows: "The last division of the Fourth arrived at thia camp late Thursday night. It was impossible for the men to pitch tents and all were permitted to stay in the sleepers until morning when they will go into their new home, not Ha foot soldiers, but as members of the now provisional artillery regiment which wilt represent Indiana on the French front within a few months. "The trip to Camp Shelby was made without incident a.ide from a mishap to one of the baggage cars at Evansville; this was remedied and all went w ell until arrival at the concentration camp. "The men were detrained only twicu during the entire trip, once at Paducaif, Kv., the last at Jackson, Miff". "lioth cities turned out to give the boyft from the state of Hoosierdom a royal welcc-me, turning out to meet them with the latest papers and magazines; cigarettes and cigars wero not lacking in the l't and the hospitality of the south, which has been heralded to all became a reality to the boys from Indiana. "After detrnining in I'adurah. Kentucky, all men were permitted to go into the river for a swim. The trip' had been hot and dusty and this opportunity was welc iio,l by a chorus of shouts from all of the men us a chance to clean up After a hard day's run. Knyal Mrlcame. "When we left the coaches, (by th? w-sv. the ih traveled as gentlemen in pullman sleepers. ) it was impossible for five- of us to go with them at that time and consequently we were expecting tc put ma tiresome it for the lest of the troops to return. However, su,h as not the case as had no more than left the train when a southern gentleman accosted us laying that if we had the time he would appreciate .-howing us their little city. Naturally we were pleased and were taken to a large touring car which conducted u about th? city m a royal fashion. It seemed that our host and hotftosf were the envy of the re.t of the population as they were entertaining some of the nation's lighters and a r,a man stated while you hay.? are here, your will is our pleasure; while our will might have been greater it was not too murh for the willing fcAuthernei s hecause the boys in khaki held the keys tu thejty. Returning to our train we resumed our journey to the southland, speeding across the country at a speed rf about thirty miles per hour which put us in Memphis at 1:00 o'clock a. ni. Some of the follows were up. and having about nn hour, had the pleasure of seeing , the river city by night, as far as possible, with the aid of electricity. Reception at Jackson. "The following afternoon (Thursday) we came to Jackson, Misaiaaippi, land here met one of the most royal ! welcome that we had yet experisnced. ! In honor of the occasion we detrained for parade about the principal parts ; c-f the capital city. "As the Headquarters section bearing Col. Moorhead, the adjutant, sevi eral of the majors and practicall all of j the Held officers started down the main street of Jsekson. the streets began to swarm with citiiens that they might have some part in extending a cordial welcome to the secend division of Hoosieri to vihit their city, the first being the .Xrd Ind. Inf. in IMS on an entirely different mission. While the band played 'Dixie' and the populace cheered we marched down the lines formed by tne citiiens. In their eagerness to see, many were crowded 'from the walks and into the strwta, 11 street car traffic was suspended during our parade and e.;.ain the key turned over to us. n the coursj of ;our line of march we passed the stale capitoi where the legislature is in teasum; here the bovs from old Indiana were informally received by the lawmakers of Mississippi. r "Returning to the statu d we were permuted to 'rest' for several momenu, while Mr. Hairy Dye, a former resident of Lebanon asked for county hoys and I had ouite. a chat with hi in. he staU'd tisat h w m the hotel tmsiin fs and enfnying a fine business.
