FOR aeverr.S weeks we have been warning the public against a eoal shortage and ttctual Buffering this winter, and we have urged them to buy coaL We have tried to convince the public including the newspapers that we have been xincere in this warning, and that prices asked have been a low aa the dealer could afford to make on the basis of present cost These warnings have apparently been received as merely an effort to sell coaL The people have been urged to wait for lower prices and, acting upon the advice given in your columns, they have waited until the situation has already become serious. r - We do not question your motives in the past some have undoubtedly had the interests of the people at heart and have been sincere in the advice givenbut we appeal to you now, publicly, to Tell the People the Truth about the Coal Situation to do your part toward keeping the people of Indiana warm this winter by warning the public to buy coal while there is coal to be had. If you ran do no, mane i real Instigation of local condition. Find oat hrrw much coal there in on hand in the yards. Figure out hat the people will ncd for the winter. Compare that Una! with thy present supply and see just how far it will go. Investigate rordiiinns in regard to getting additional shipment when the yard can take care of them. See for yourself what the actual situation in. The retail coal merchant hare provided coal op to the rapacitr of their yards. They did not wait for lower prirrs they paid what waa demanded and they are selling thia coal at prices which represent only a small profit. When thia atock is (old and rihv tributed, they have no nmrsnre that they can buy more coal at lower mine priesa th.iti they have paid for the present supply. We urge you to make the invest i ration suggested. It won't taks long and every retail coal nienhant ia ready and willing to give you any information ou deaire. Find oat what the aituation ia. If the danger ia as aerioua aa we have represented it, tell the nuMir. That's all we a.-k, but we ask It in the name of the people of Indiana, was deserve to know the whole truth. Thin appro! BY JACK VE10CK. ' l ;ciiaal X.v aerrica.) NEW YORK, Septembaf 22 Picking the winner of the coming world's series ia a ticklish task; Proof of this may be found in the iact that sentiment today is very evenly divided between the White Sox and the Giants, though the dawning of the day for the first game may ftnd the
Giants slight favorites to win. A preponderance of New York money, more 3 than anything else, will bo responaible ex for this. ' From the writer's viewpoint, the October classic will result in a victory for the White Sox, though the series -3 "heuld be one of the greatest ever played. 3 Both teams brist'.e with cli'.ss in sa heir own leagues and both are game S3 fighters to the core. But Sox pitch- 5 ers have the call over those of the ra Giants and pitching will be a vital : factor. Playing the first two games in Chicago gives the Sox an added :2 advantage. For the Hrst tirae the S3 Giants and the Red Sox met in 1812, 5 the class of" the contentions in the 3 coming series is admitted by partisans 3 of both teams. Giant adherents admit 5 that they expect Chicago to put up a great battle, while those favoring sr Chicago agree that Rowland's team , will face a foe worthy of its metal.
