In my mind we are righting for an ideal the destruction of Prussianism hich irclude the dregs of heathendom, the policy of the kaiser. This is a conflict between democracy, the rule of the many, and autocracy, the rule of the few. Christianity and the preservation of civilization are swinging in the balance against tyranny and anarchy the right against the wrong. The right should win hut in war the mm powerful take home the laurels. We can never have permanent peace intil 1'russianism is crushed. i'eace at this time would only be temporary which might be compared to a smoldering (ire, ready at any moment to flash anew. We are fighting to liWate the world from the barbarous hand of the Teuton! Think of poor suffering Belgium, whose beautiful homes were devastated and the people tortured or taken an slaves. Th-nce thia mighty horde swept down on France, whose hrave men have given their lives, to the last one! Should the Germans crush France, then England would be easy picking and thence the U. S. A. France has already announced that she can hold out only until the middle of September. .Now it' up to you Sammies to liberate tho worlii to keep the kaiser from the very doors of your own homes, lie has already boasted that his son would I in the white house within a year and nothing but the mighty Moulder of Uncle Sam can ki'ep him out, or start the wheel of liberty to rolling. The ida is to nip the power of the kaiser in the bud. The fate of the world is in your hands you hold the pivot and may God help you to swing the pendulum right! Thousands of people of our nation have lived ami died and were never known outside their own community, but you, "Sammies of 1917," will go down in the annals of history forever. You will share a place beside that of Washington and Napoleon, even thi!-. ysu give yir young life to this great cause you will not have died in vain. Thousands have fallen to make this nation what it is today and history repeats itself, you are preserving a home for generations yet unborn. You represent as as a ration "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them," Matt 7, 0, can be applied to you. Remember you stand for liberty iuiu j.,t:c. I" ?T eryday life you should Teverenee the uniform of your nation by the best of right living. We ar jircud of you (I speak for the county as a whole) who lay your lives on the altar of your country. Our county hfis noted patriots of three -s and we have as food material
today a we ever had. The world has already decided that our county produces the best corn on the globe. Now with the same nutritive elements, with
environment added, why shouldn't she produce the best boys on the globe? Somehow 1 have this idea, but the world will have to decide this question too. Who knows, perhaps it will be left for one of you to bomb the kaiser or hoist Old Glory over Berlin. Even though you could not have this pleasure, every little hit helps to bring us nearer to the goal. Each of you strive to do your very bent the angels can do no more. Ever keep in mind that if the kaiser wins, we will have no automobiles, no luxuries of any kind, nothing but sorrow and suffering. The taxes today are very small in comparison to what he wouid extort front us. The men who ar shirking their duty today should be classed as traitors. As Paul says. "If ye are not for me ye are against me," Don't you suppose the kaiser smiles and renews his determination to win when he reads of the petty exemption claims filed hy some of the able bodied men, even of Reone county? When the conflict is over these slackers will have no country, this grand U. S. A will belong to you who have followed in your grandfathers' steps. The following verse expresses my sentiments clearly: Uncle Sum needs you, the fight is on; Re a whacker, not a slacker. The fight is on; You've had pleasures, education, And the best homo in creation What has he raised you for? To crush this curse of war. Uncle Sam needs you, the fight is on. While you ore giving your life to your country, you should prepare a future home for your soul. I've already talked with many of you along thia line. It is grand indeed to give your all -"one life, to your country.
You are also serving God in protecting
the ornhans and those who are home
less amid the devastated regions uf Fmace, to say nothing of the preservation of civilization and Christianity but it is gr"ler to ive
own soul to God.
I've tried in vain to get the name of every boy in this county, whi is in

f:iends for sending me the names of these boys. I have a plan perfected by which the Sammies of Boone county will receive tiie "home paper" each week. Exper
ience has taught me that news from
me is a good tonic. We (I seak for the county as a
whole) thank each of you personally
for enlisting in this great cnuse, for we realize that you are sacrificing your lives, if need be, to preserve a home for all who remain behind. Don't
get sick at heart and believe nobody cares for vou for we do.
Please do not forget that whiie you re lighting in the ranks we are fightlg battles of mental agony within
our hearts. Last week I was talking with a mother who has two sons in
France, whom she says do not write
regularly. You should not neglect this duty to those who love you best.
Now may God bless you and bring
you hack to us.
