SMITH LEARNS OF HER OWN FITNESS (A bit of dialogue overheard in the rear of the Smith-Jones back fence war educational bureau. Time now; I'lace, Indiana.) Mrs. Smith I can't imagine what they want me to sign this service caul Mrs. Jones; I have never done a thing except wash the clothes on Moniay. iron them Tuesday; scrub and ook and try to keep the children looking half way decent all the rest u;' he week and maybe go to church on Sunday, Surely the government locsn't .are to 'knew that. But if '.here is any of that kind of work to do where I can do it and look ai'te? .he lest of the Smiths, why I'd like to feel I wae doing my share. Mrs. Jor.es 1 thought I heard yuu ay that you used to drive the horse md rake hay, before you und Henry moved to tfjwn. Mr s. Smith, Mrs. Smith Why yes, I did do that: I have handled horses. And say when : comes to handling a team, there sn't n woman in this town that can come up to me. Mrs. Jones Well there's the answer to your own question, Mrs. Smith. You see the gnvei nment doesn't know how many men it will need to whip the kaiser. It may take so many that there will mo a serious shortage in many lines of work. In most cases, too, there are women who can be substituted. For instance, I've no doubt you can drive a team as well as manymen now duing that sort of work. Of course you don't want to leave your home and family without good reason, but if it comes to a pinch, why I guess you could do driving a team about as well as I could go back to the office and relieve r rank the head bookkeeper who has registered and may be drafted. Mrs. Smith Yes, 1 remember having seen pictures of women street car conductors in London. Mrs. Jones That's the idea exactly ; you see many women can go to work if there is reason. Stenographers, bookkeepers, automobile drivers, street car conductors, machine hands in man. factories Oh there are plenty of places. The point is are we willing. Mrs. Smith Willing well if they neM me they'll have my address. I'll sign that service card right away. I And she md).
