There is probably the largest corn acreage in year out in the counties in tiie corn belt, but farmers have been struggling against ruuwus weather. The county and city officials, too, are operating against them by continuing public work and taking laborer that would otherwise go to the farm. This in si.ite of Governor Goodrich's re quest that all public improvements be curtailed during the war. Experiences farmers say that il take J28 days to mature com proper ly. There is much talk of "ninety day corn" but those who View front long tilling of the soil declare that the word a misnomer in most seasons. Had weather during May delayed i.e planting of corn, and heavy rains naoo it necessary to plant a good por tion of the corn in June. Much corn has been planted or replanted in the ast two-weeks. The early corn, too. is endangered by weeds, which grew to fast during the wet weather that tiie hoe is the only effective weapon sainst them. The shortage ef labor i making it impossible for many 'armer to clean their corn with the hoe. The average date of the first kil ling frost in Indiana is October 19, according to the statistics of the United State weather bureau. Often the frost comes by the first of October. If the front should be a little earlier than the average time this year, the unmatured corn will be seriously dam aged. There is ft possibility that the whole corn crop may be a terrible fnilure. because of weatber conditions now and in event of an early froat. The 1917 torn crop is the bigfest thing in Indiana. It U more important to the economic life of the slat this year than ever. And right now it it he biggest gamble in the state. The farmers hope to wilt and they will make desperate effort to hurry the crop to maturity by hard work extended over long hour. WATER RENT DIE.
