Y., July 2 Rattling with stroeg eddien that thi-riitentd to dra tlwm down to death in Niagara's Ifreat whirlpools, a sroic of rescuers at daybreak today resumed their aearch for the bodlea of niore than a dozen persons reported missina; following; thcr plunge of a crowded electric car yesterday afternoon into the rapiils. Ten bodies had been recovered and eight of them identified early today. The bodies of two other prsona, positively known to- have been on the wrecked car, have not been recovered The death toll probably will exceed twenty and may reach thirty. Itodios of many of the missing may never be recovered, men familiar with Niagara 's Yapids say today, Tlu-y were seized by the rushing water;;, battered against thc rocks and then devoured by the great whirlpools that form part of NiBttarn's fr-enic bauty. Warninif of a washout on the (rorffe railroad came just si x minutes too late to prevent the tragedy. . militiaman ami a man employed on the cantilever bridge spanning the rapids phoned the dupat.liera office. But the car operated by Motorman Luke Crandall had left six minutes before, crowded with pleasure seekers, most of them from middle western cities, who were enjoying the beauties of Niagara in a ride over the famous "gorge" route. Some one on the rear platform had just broken into the chorus "Tippersry" when the tracks gave way. In an instant the car was hurled over the walled embankment down twenty feet into the swift waters of the rapids. The tlisaster occurred on the American side just south of the supfor'ri of the cantilever bridge. fvildmrs rushed to the rescue but had difficulty fighting the angry rapids. It was late at night, after the car had been dragged from the rapids by a de rrick, that most of the bodies weie recovered. ..... R. G. wesitern invasion which begins at Cleveland on July 7. That is, if Babe Ruth isn't kept out of the game too long by Czar Johnson for plugging I'm p. Owena at Boston. He points out that the Sox are playing better varly-scason baseball than they did at this time last season, and the chart shows that on July 1, 1916, the Boston club waa occupying fifth place. While there is a strong point in the relative showing of the team this year aa against 1D16, it is hard to see why Barry should pick the coming road trip for a Red Sox drive. Every tall club finds obstacles on the road which are not encountered at home. And the average winning
club does most of its winning on the ; home lot and is fortunate to break j even or a little better on the road. : But Barry is set in his belief, and it is more than likely that he exleet the pitchers to show better form. Ruth and Ix?onard bore the brunt of the pitching up to the middle of June. They worked any old time they were
needed and it waa up to them because Shore and Mays were not ready. Two C ks ago, however, these two hurlers
began to show signs of real fonn and took a heavy load off Barry's mind.
If Boston is to come through as
Barry predicts, she will have to ac
complish it with four pitchers, and every one of t)ie four will have to tie
going at top speed, according to the
way the dope sheet reads. This is why Ruth's presence in th lineup is absolutely imperative. Boston's
pitchers are great workmen when they are all working, but in the west they
are going to encounter some sturrhorn opposition on the mound, for the
White Sox and Cleveland ataffa are improving with the warm weather
here to stay, and the White Sox, in particular, are long on pitching talent, where Boston is badly in need of a fifth pitcher. Bader has shown class
thc few games in which he haa irked, nut as a regular he probably II he found a weak sister. Whatever the standing of the Bos
ton rlub may be when they hit the
ad for the second long trip, the out
come ef their invasion will be watched
with the keenest Interest by the fans,
for if the Red Sox staff is going to
crack, as predicted hy so many of the
tics, the coming road trip will lie
the logical place for the crash.
One thing in favor of a stubborn
fight on the part of the Bostonei is the indomitable confidence of every
one connected with the team, from President Harry Frazee down to the mascot.. Those Sox have met with
ucrcss so often that they ean't understand what "slump" or "hard going" means.
WAGNFR FOR MANAGER? Will this be Jimmy Callahan's last season as manager of the Pirates? Barney Dreyfus hasn't hinted that he is contemplating a change, and as I'arnoy doesn't very often deal in futures for publication he would probably answer the direct question
with somp remark about the high cost
of holes in cheese. But the wags have it that Callahan
will probably "resign" at the close of the present season and that Honns Wagner will be namfcd manager of the
club.
That Wagner returned tc tke Pirates with the understanding he waa to be ms.de manager is improbable, for Hnmi is not thBt kind of a man. The big Dutchman is kindly, and If any
thing, a bit sentimental, Ha is nut
the kind of a man who would horn
his wav into the shnea of another.
Yet the fact remain that Honns is
immf ni-oTv popular, arid as man. 'Of !h4i pirates his popularity w he cxen greater, for he is st'l! em' ' ttiayinr ball. ' Whether or nit I woa'd eemmi. r the uutngmt t
