PLAYING THE FIELD BY JACK VEIOCK. - Me l(ri.li"t Vest VeirrY NEW YORK, June 22. Fritz Maiel, the diminutive Yankee inlielder, a made ginel at last. After a foiir-yiar hnttie against eany obstacles in his path as a mem!kt of the Yanks, Maisel has estab lished himself as a regular, and Catonviile, Md., his home town, uppears te Is- dimly pla.aer.td on the baseball map. It has ln-en within the rut month that Manel has come into his own. W hin the season opened there were any number of rntics who said he would never do a a second baseman, liiil Iionovan has Fiddy llauman and Joe (iedenn on the tiemh, Inith eager for the chance to gran the seeimdV.nainv inh. nnd for a time it looked itam that Maisel would have to be content to rleeorute the lor.g timbers in the dugout His holding w his b.g fault, ami to say the least lie was a wabbly actor around second base. Naturitlly a third n;,cman or shortu.p, Mai.cl fuunrl the trrritnrj around the keyi tone sack entirely foreign to him. He got into the hahit of fighting the ball and he found it difficult to get his throws away without pullhig W-illie Pipp about toen milei off the bag. But with Frank Baker hoHing lb third base Job and Koger Pnckinbaugh tirmly established at shortstop, Maisel had to make a second hastman out nf himsi-lf or lie shoved out of the spotlight. So Maisel buckled down t the job; and though he bad a tough tone of It. hs bnallv won out. II II Donovan is satisfied now that M' '.al

West Side Square since Frit has made good the Yankee infield stands out as one of the very best in the big leagues. Maisel had to face the same proposition that Buck Hcraor was up against when he joined the Giants, for although Heriog played fifty orlil games at stcond for the Giants back 1908. lie spent the succeeding years up to 10!6 around third base and the shortlield and he said at the time that playing on the left side of the diamond so long has made it impera tive for him to learn the A B C's of keystone sack'iig all over again. Maisel never played regularly as a second baseman until this season. At Baltimore he played both, thiid and short nnd he came to the Yanks as a third sacker for a price said to have been $12,000. In 1916 an injured shoulder was in his way as a big handicap, and he was not of much use to the club. He played in only 53 games, part at second base and the rest in the outergardens. But a bail player who stands his team 12,000 cold simoleons is not parted with easily, and Donovan antd to give Maisel every possible hanee to muke good. Ilay the fans who said Maisel would never do as a second baseman are showering him with praise, for he beginning to field with the grace 1 steadiness of Eddie Collins and he had an active brain out there around the keystone that makes h's presence on the club doubly valuable. OH. LISTEN TO COFFEY. That handsome Roscommon giant, Jeems Coffey, is out with another howl a long, loud, lurid howl about the way the scribes have been treating him since he was out roughed hy Carl Morris in a New York ring a few weeks ago. Jeems savs that he can't understand why t.e sirlbos forget to mention the name of Coffey when they write about the heavyweight situation and the eligible challengers for Jess Will ird's headgear. Listen to Jeems just a minute! "I've m-aten Morris twice," says Coffey, "and my name is never mentioned in connection with Willard's. Of course, the knockers will say that Frank Moran heat me twice and that that settles me. hut they don't know what they are talking about. Moran's i wo wins over n. were downright flukes. In our first fight, after he picked up that hammer from the floor mil bit n, e with it, I got up and was leaning on the ropes:, thinking how sweetly the thrushes were warhling in Roscommon whan the referee stopped the tight. That wasn't fair, for the referee should have given me time to think. The same thing hap--.icn'il in the second fight after I had been pasting Moran all around the ring. It wasn't right, I claim. "Ir, my lights with Morns I think I won birth timrs, yet they say I'm a good motorman and talk about itcr.a.g him with Willard. Can you beat that?" This is what Coffey told Bat Mas'.erson, the veteran New York writer, and Flat sooms to agree that Jim ought to have his chance along with Morris and the rest. BINGLES AND BONERS BY JACK VEIOCK.
