"The war fund campaign, hoever, is entirely different from the membership campaign. A strong, active chapter in a community signifies interest in Red Cross work and sympathy with the aims of the society. The siie of its war fur.d may be said, on the other hand, to indicate the wealth and geneiosity of the community. The local fund has been started with a few large contributions amounting nt the outset to about ;;,HH). This is well enough for a start It indicates; a rommcmhiblc understanding of the function of the Red Cross, for it is to be presumed that a gift of 1 1.01)0 is made only after the giver ha satisfied himself that his money will be well spent. The firit enetrihuters must have satisfied themselves some time ago that their money was goieg to bo used under proper auspices for a noble work. "It has been announced that all money collected in Indiana will be ::pent in equipping the various hospital units which this state will send with the fighting forces. The first of these hospitals, the Colonel Kli Lilly hate hospital, must first be fitted out, then other hospitals will be established either hy large contributions from wealthy Indianans, or from the general fund. This war fund, in hort, is the life of Indiana's ked Cross activities. Unless it is large. mA thua in keeping with the state's position in the country, Indiana will have to be content with a minor part, un experience which, considering her eruditions, will not he relished.
