BY JACK VEIOCK. ltv Ifte fsfrrsrtflisnt Veiri frrriie.l NEW YORK, May 2".. There was a no when W'ilhert Robinson of the

oljirs was considered the (rf'test

handler of pitchers in the business.

Today Robinson found a shadow

ast across this particular claim, the

shadow of Fred Mitchell, new mana

ger of the Chicago Cubs.

Since the opening of the National

eaftue season, the work ot the t,uns

ss a team has been surprisingly

tronir. The club is full of fight, hits

he ball hard and fields well. But the

work of the Chicago pitchers, particu-

r'y the comeback members of the

staff, reflects the influence and coach-

r.tt of Fred Mitchell, whose long ex-

nerience as a big league pitcher has not been spent in vain. Phil Douglas,

shunted to the minors, pitched a

four-hit victory against the Giants

terday. Since the season opened

Douglas' most notable performances

nchtde a two-hit game and two shut1s. Big Jim Vaughn, Cub south'iaw, is pitching better ball than ever.

Me lias pitched two two-hit games; he

gtiri d in the no-hit game rred Toney

pitched against the Cubs, holding Cin

cinnati hitless for nine innings, only to one in the tenth, and he has been the

nost dangerous of ail Cub hurleqa so

far.

The work of Tom Seaton, who Rpent he greater part of last season in the

minors, shows goat improvement un-

W MiU'hell. Seaton has three three!iit games to his credit this season and is also credited with a shutout Dutch Iteuber and Vic Aldridge, the Cub u-jkies, are both showing real form n the mound.

Giving the pitchers full credit, it appears that the Mitchell system of handling pitchers is the real secret

f their suecms.
