10 fill 1QK Explains His Vote Against the Adoption of Cunningham Amendment. At the Vnion meeting last Sunday night in the interest of the V. M. C At war work movement, the following resolutiona were adopted and wired immediately to Senators James E. Watson and Harry S. New: "The defeat of the conservation idea contained in Hie Cummin prohi bitury amendment was a matter of deep disappointment to the people of Boone county. In refusing to support that idea you failed to represent your constituency. The people of Indiana are rallying loyally, each in the measure of his ability, to the support o tn? TOM of ; ernnr. There the president and the !m are no shirkers hero. We expect our senators in rongi c-:is to b? as loyal to the pevmle's highest interest in this Lour of peril as we are trying to be." In response to tnat messako the Rev. A. I.. Ward tof-iy r.c;vf.l the following reply from Senator New: "Dear Sir: "It is somewhat discouraging. I confess, to receive the kind of telegram 1 did from you with reference to the trmpcrai.ee question. The fact i the good people whim you represent do nut understand just what the Cummin amendment was. hist what it provided and what it failed to provide. "In the first place let me tell you that I am just as much in favor of well considered, advanced temperance legislation as is any one. But we must know just what it is that we are voting on and what the consequences ore to be. Ever)- one here is studying this question along with others and the liquor question Is being ropd ered by the war department, the ti-eas-ury department and the agriculture drprtmTt r.r! it is certain that these departments nil make recommendations as to how this question can best he met. I propose to follow those recent memlutions in this emergency and take the consequences, if the people of Indiana are sufficiently unreasonable to consider this couise of re lying on tlie service of experts as unreasonable. The Cummins amendment had no place in the Espionage hill, was piented without any consideration, and at a time while other committees were working on this very ton and Mr. Cummins himself admitted that he doubted its consti tutionality which must be absolutely certain. "Let me assure you that I am as much for temperance as you are, but we must go-about it in an intelligent vay, having active regurd for all its aspects. BOUGHT MOTOR HEARSE. John M.
