Jonas, B. a SHOl I.ll HI KRY ALONG. The house of representatives has passed the big war fund bill, to raise about fl,800.000,000 for the conduct of tb war for this year, the vote being 329 to 76. In the list of those oppo.mg the bill were two Indiana congrcsmnen, Puraell of the 9th district, and Vestal, of the 8th district. Their reasons for tt;eir opposing votes arc not announced. The final bill seems to be on a fairly good basis, although it is expected that the senate will make many crtanges m wc unai um, helping it or not being a question. There is one thing that is sure, and that is that the United States can not fight thia war without money, and ready money too. It will not do to put all the burden upon future generations, and each year should pay a fair share of the cost of that particular year. There ia one change in the original bill that will be pleasing to a large majority of the people of the countryand that ia that the tariff rates have been increased by a horiiontal addition of ten per cent to the existing rates. This should help to a large extent in filling Uncle Sam's coffers, whether war is on or not. Everybody was agreed that the ineome taxes would be increased and that liquors and tobacco would be given the usual boost. Many of the taxes wilt bs noxious ami burdensome, but the war must b financed, and the people will not justify a longer delay ia meeting Germany on the sea and on the land. The newspapers are hard hit, but newspapers cannot expect to go scot free, when every other line of business is hit and hit bard. The newspapers do not object to paying any fair shar of the taxes required, and especially if the government wili put into execution its promise to reduce the price of paper to the publishers, a price that was boosted all at once and without any real reason by the manufacturers and jobbers. The postal rates will be increased, and this will make a htavy charge upon the newspapers, but they are willing to pay their share to help bring the war to speedy and righteous end. The tone system of postal rates for papers will be expensive to the papers, but it is hardly fair any how that a newspaper or magazine should be sent clear across the country for the tame rout that one is sent a few miles. Now, let the senate Improve the
bill it it can, but let It b speedily enacted into law, after a fair consideration. The house and senate ahould work in harmony with th other officials of the government ia bringing the war to a successful end, and
H have mneh to Ho with surh LET ITALY HAVE A LOAN. Now it ii an Italian party that cornea from the old world to pay its respect to Uncle Sam, and to borrow a little money. The party contains a prince, and some other hich functionaries, and, (rreatest of them all, the wonderful Marconi. The party, too, like the French, brought alone; an orator, and he says that the Italians are "proud to find themselves in the great American di'inuciati." There are many thousands of Italians in this country, especially in the great cities, and they and the Americans, too will give the lulian party a warm welcome. The average United Stoteser has pretty friendly feeling for Italy, and is glad to see the old country come up and out into a broader liberty. The Italians have a king, but he does not rule mu' h merely bears the honors such as King George does In England. The people are ruling Italy and are doing fairly well, and the army over there is holding its own with Austria rcasonibly well. This country need not be ashamed of its ally, Italy, and it will be safe to loan her a little money, say a few hundred millions. WAR TIMES PROSPEKOr.S. Some people seem to think thai war times mny bring hard times, but war times are prosperous times. For one thing, there is unusual demand for labor. Uncle Sam is bidding against the shops, mines and mills. He wants thousands of carenters and men in every line of work, iinii these demands will make for prosperity. Then, too, there is announcement of letting bids for 74.IXIO motor vehicles tutos, motorcycles, and s,i forth. 1 ct nobody 1 afraid that there will be any let down in financial af fairs, or in the libor market; and too, prices will necessarily be reas onably high they must not lie toe high. The" government has the power. at least in war times, to protect the people from extortion and Injustice ol ev?ry kind, hut no one will have tf do any work or sell any product of ary kind without just compensation. NO VACANT SPACE. That high cost of living is being helped some by the "Home (iuardeners," for the little onions are be ginning to appear on thousands ot tallies, and the radishes are fillinp up the vacant sjmces in the averagi human food receptacle, and so life ii worth living. A few more dnys of warm rains and warmer sunshine hout any froft and there will be no hunger even for early spring v tables in this land of ours. NOBODY IS SURPRISED. Indiana has furnished more than the quota of soldiers asked so far, ard is the foremost state in the Un in the point of enlistments in the army and navy. Well, what of that? Norsxiy is surprised. Is not this th hist state of the Union in all respects anyhow ? WE ARE "SOME" PATIENT. Think of people so patient and long suffering that they will pay ten and fifteen cents for a loaf of bread whili the grains of their free land arc lie inir made into alcohol.
