A convention of unusual interest tn

retail dry good merchants of Indiana will be held in Indianapolis, Tues

day, June 12th, being the. Third An

il Convention of the Intliana Ketuil

Dry Goods Association.

The Association will depart from its ual rule and will omit the formal

banquet. In its stead will be given

smoker, the entire convention be

ing given over to the discussion of the business problems of the retail

dry gooda and ready-to-wear mer

chant.

At the smoker a Question Bo will

be conducted to which the dry goods merchants of the state have been asked to submit questions relative to any problem in their business which

they have not been able to successfully solve, thus drawing out a free

liscussion of the particular subject

and in this manner gaining the ex

perience of other merchants who have

successfully solved the same question.

The convention will last but one day

nnd will be divided in three sessions,

the final session being the smoker, all three sessions lieing held at the Claypool hotel.

Due to the conditions existing In all

lines of business and especially in the retail dry goods line on neeount of the war, the convention promises to lie

of unusual interest.

At this convention tht Mid West

Dry Goods Association will bo form

ed comprised of the membership of

the three .states, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio.

Membership in the Indiana Dry

Uoods Association will curry with it

membership in the Mid West Retail

Dry Goods Association without ad

ditional cost. The convention Tues-

lay. June 111th, will go a long way

in bringing together in a closet relationship the retail dry goods mer-

hants of the state and should lie at

tended by every merchant in that line.

BY JOHN A. LAPP

cted; the governor should lie held

responsible and if he fads should be

turned out of office.

One question before the convent will lie the matter of selecting a

state statistician or geologist. Six

years ai?o a stone cutter was ejertra

i statistician. The simple way to give

the people power is to put the respon-

ibility on one or two persons and the

people look to them for proper work.

In the judiciary we must work out our

bill of rights where it says (he courts

-hall be open, cases tried without de

lay. At Indianapolis, cases arp on the dockets for two or three years. We h;e an appellate and supreme court and the Istte r spends most of the time deciding before which cases should be tried. Cases should go throtigh all the courts in at least six months. In

a California county a case, goes through the courts inside of four weeks. So we need a central court at the capital, one court in the county

which will do away with the justices

of the peace. Home Rule for Citica.

"Cities should have the home rule

and not be hampered by the state leg

islature." On the question of fran

fhises in Indiana, Mr. Lapp proposed

that the state should not allow a fran

chise to become a vested right or

wrong in opposition to the people';

rights. Franchises should be subject

to alteration, amendment or entire re

peal.

"The new constitution should be framed on the basis that man ia above property the rights of life first The power of all should be exercised for

the benefit of each. Now when the

people ore thinking along these line.

it ia a good time for Indiana to make, a new constitution. It ia a good time

to get broad constitution. No man

should go to that convention who does

not think In the termi of the peopla. Indiana la setting an example In going to school before selecting Kb dele-

gstea. With all thia study and en

thusiasm we may b aura what Mi

result i tomg to be.
