After two days of intensified wining, dining, bowing and smiling, Marshal Joffre and his staff have quit New York for their girat glimpse of the mainstay of the United Stales army. Joffre departed this morning for an official inspection of the military academy at West Point The hero of the Marne in his two-day stay here probably was the recipient of the greatest demonstration ever accorded a popular idol in history. It culminated last night in a mammoth testimonial benefit in Metropolitan opera house, at which iKCJ.flOO was raised for charities in Frame. To day New York starts on her second lap of feting and sjieech making upon the arrival of the English commission from Washington. The commission will be headed by Arthur J. Balfour, British foreign minister. Arriving at the Battery from Jersey City at 2:45 p. m., the party, escorted by Squadron C. of Brooklyn, wi'l proceed up Broadway to the City Hail. There something of a repetition of a welcome given the French commission will be a.-eor.led. Mayor Mitchell and Joseph H. Chnate, will speak. Visit Aator Residence. From the City Hall the visitors will proce.il to the residence of Vincent Astor. Marshal Joffre and his party will return from West Point in time for the official dinner to the French and English commissions at 8:00 p. m at the Waldorf-Astoria.
