I ll,i Ihr elera.ir.''.eai Vr,'i Brrrlre ) j INDIANAPOLIS, March 2,-The1 I skiea rlearel today in the Indiana as'senibiy, and there was real hope for ( same important non-pattisiin leirislation K"U'" through before Mniuia night. The evci.se tax bill, which be- , cam" a deadly political titrht, is ..afe!y jut of the way, and the IcKistatoin turned their eye.- to other mea lures. There was more sentiment for the liilfhway eoninii-siin bill today than .by the home may pass when it c.nies hack to the senate. The Ax Will he Applied. That the a vail lie applied to neatly nil bills cillitiK for extra ej.pondit .res of money by the state was milicaU.I todav when the house killed 'he s'lninio.i.-. bill to raise salaries nf Supreme and anpelhite court judire from $B.0eO to .-. T.r.OO a year. The failure of the excise bill was said to be the cause of the adoption of the lanmitt'i' report recominendini- indefinite, po dponement. The house hit another salary incr.'nse bill when the lioai'dsley senate bill to permit the raisiny of saluiiei of juiiues of Elkhart county failed because of lack of constitutional majority, there beiny 47 aves and '!7 noc-. The bill will be called up auain. The bill failed because of a senate amendment. OriKinally, the hill permitted county commissioners to raise -ularies of superior and circuit judges up to $.,.000 in counties of over 'IH.OO0 population. The senate struck out the population limit tnd many representatives from small counties, voted uvtainst the hill because they said their cunties could mil stand the increase. Representative Anderson explained the bill, and w ill call it up ayuin. The house passed Senator Summers' bill Kiviny savings hank the riyht to RESTAURANTS MEAL AND i At n meeting of the proprietors of ! the various restaurants held at J. S. V'arrovdale Men Given Freedom hy Germany. ,B IfiV fiic, nud.ainl Vcir Kcrrlcr.) Hl'.rildN, March 2. Officials here expressed the hope today that the release of four Yarrow. lale prisoners i Rill at least offer proof that entente charges that Germany is seckinjr daliberately to provoke war watli the i Fnited States are unfounded, j There is little hope that the departure of the Vai lowilale men will do any more than slightly decrease the tension between the two countries. Hut, officials said today, their arrival in Denmark will at least dispel the belief existing in some nuarters in America that a so-called "militarist'' (arty in Germany is iruidintf (lp country's destinies. Hary Gemittav ireil war with the United States, it s pointed out, she would huvc de layed the release of the Yarrowdale n. by one pretext or other, until public sentiment in the t'nited States became more inflamed. THEIR RETREAT Hold Up the British Advance on That Stronghold. SERIES OF SHARP FIGHTS RECORDED British Experts lielieve Germans Are Preparing For Great Drive Against the Allies. in,, (,,, nfernclieniil .Vrirj ttrrr(t,. LONDON, March 2. The Germans halted their retreat before ltopjume, at least temporarily. In a series of sharp coinhats before the Teuton stinnithold yesterday, 'he Germans held up Ihe advance of the Ilrttish forces approaching P.apaume from Thilloy. (ierma.a artilleiy ivas turneij loose from the crc-ls beninil liapaume and the adanriny British lines were rocked with machine irunfire from the outskirts of the town itaelf. The latest report from the war department makes no mention of the operations directly in front of Bapaume and records only a comparatively slight yain north of Miraumount. yome military critics took the view today that the command 'is are forming their lines for the defense of Bapaume and w ill retreat Tin further but the general impression here is that Bapaume will be in British hands liefore the middle of next week. Belief that tho German retirement is only a strategic move that will precede a M-.iasbiny blow hy llindenburg against the British front found support in many circles today. The Times asked editorially if the German tactics of shortening their lines may not disarrange British plans for a spring drive. In the house of commons Henry W. I'orster, financial secretary of the war office, declared he believed Hindepburg was ihurteniny his lines so be might gather men for a yreat blow. BOOST THE LUNCH PRICES price.
