DEDICATION
Chanukih or Feaat of Ilg-hts commemorating: the victory of the Maccabees, will be ushered in Hie .Tewleh homj Thursday evening. December the 14th. and Friday evoJilngr t 8 o'clock. RaJjhl Julius Ilappaport -will speak in the Fibley Street Snaogr about "Enthusiasm, the Secret of Success," taking- Ms onj from the eplendld spirit of enthusiasm that inspired the MaccaIeen. FBAST OF OEDIf'ATIOX. The Feast of Dedication, or Feast of IJ fhts. as the festival known in iha Synagogue as Chanukah is called, will be observed in Jewish circles for eljfht days, beginning the evening of December 14. Chanukah is a minor festival of th synagogal calendar. No special ritual services la now called in its ohervan. In connection with the
Sabbath of tha Chanukah week there are special prayer recited to commemorate the festival, while In the home candles are lighted beginning with one candle on the second, three on the third and so on. The festival has, however, an Increasing value In the affection of the Jewish people who read in it a verification of their hope and agelong idealism. Overlapping a very ancient cermonial in connection with the winter solstice was the celebration of a historical event, namely, the triumph of the Maccabees in their battle against the lm-perlallsm of Syria. These epochal events In the stirring years of 168-163 B. C. E., recount the valor anj heroism of a few Palestinian Jews who rose in revolt against the tyrannies of King Antiochus of Syria, also known as 'Kpiphanes," the mad man. This tyrant sought to compel his subjects to forswear their native language, and abandon their religion, which had even at that day been an inherlmnoe of centuries.

Submiastve aubjects and weaklings yielded to the royal decrees and bowea before the Images made by man's hand and offered up sacrifice to abominations forbidden by the stern religion of their fathers. The fafth of Israel was threatened with extinction. The idols of heathenism had Uisplaced the altar dedicated to God on Mount Moriah (Jerusalem), and the national existence of Israel was doommed. when a prleat of Modln. named Ma-ttathlas rallied a few of his countrymen to his side and by the aid of his sons notably Jtidah. refled ths aggression of the Syrian tyrant. "With death-defying zeal' these heroic Maccabeans successfully conducte.i a series of military campaigns against various Syrian generals sent to subdue them, and as r result, drove the invaders from the country. The Temple tint had been desecrated by the idols of heathenism was reconsecrated to the One God, Father of all mercies. The significance of Chanukah Is evidenced by the fascination the story of Judah and his heroic brothers has on the Imagination of every generation. Ills exploits, as well as the entire epoch In which these men and their followers figure, are the theme-a of many legends. The martyrdom of Hannah and her seven sons Is the most popular of these legends. This Btory rolates the hero, ism of a deroted mother, who. rather than submit to the defilement of pagranism. Is herself finally put to death, together with her sons. All atorles recount the loyalty of the Palestinian Jews to their religious corenant and set an example to future generations of heroic devotion to their religious heritage. To the Jewish people of this present era Chanukah corroborates their abiding faith In God's Justice. Who proves by history that Justice event, ually trium-phs. ."o matter Tiow charged with prll were the lives of the Jewish people, they have obtained ample testimony to the prophetic promise: "Nt by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord." The Jewish people realize, as a result of their long contact with mankind, that there Is no king- saved by a multitude of his host. On the contrary. Chanukah voices the hope that the day will come when racial hatreds and national selfishness will yield to the appeals of humanity and brotherhood, and all peoples be banded together In a corenant of love and righteousness. In the religious schools there are usually entertainments in which plays or recitations commemoratingthe valor of the Maccabees are staged.
