CHRISTMAS SHOPPING "It is net yet too late to shop early," was the way a down-town merchant put it today; by which he meant that the early part of the

day is best for the Christmas buyer. Then the crocks are assorted and in order, the salespeople fresh and attentive, and the crowds are not so dense. Due consideration for clerks and store employes in general, and a selfish interest in the saving of one's own time and temper bespeak for all who have gifts to buy the early hours of the day.

frcm Europe by way of the canal rose frcm 20,416 tons to 149,553 tons, while American imports increased from 144,591 to 186,696 tons. The item in Col. Morrow's report which should occasion reflection but not alarm in the United States was the statement that exports from the Atlantic and Gulf ports to the west

coast of South America shrunk frcm 993,261 to 244,514 tons. South America i3- the natural market for North American products, even a greater potential market than Europe. Still our diplomatic efforts seem more strongly centered on European troubles than they are in developing a spirit of warm regard in our southern neighbors. Commercial and diplomatic

efforts of government and private citizens should

give moie and more attention to South America. The United States is a ready market for South American products, and South America should be a ready market for our;. The Panama Canal traffic will quadruple in volume, according to the prediction of Col. Morrow. Wise diplomacy will make that traffic chiefly a matter of inter-American commerce.

FARMERS PONDER

According to press dispatches, the spokesman for the railway shopmen's union complains

of the poor condition of railway equipment and at the same time boasts that the shop strike is still 50 per ecnt effective. If the farmers who axe unable to get cars to ship their products will let that sink into the back of their heads, perhaps we shall hear less about a farmer-labor-urion political organization. After a full and fair hearing, the Railroad Labor Board established what it considered reasonable wages for the shop workers, subject, of course to change

when g-cod cause could be shown. Instead of accepting that wage for the time being and asking for an increase on further showing, the men struck. Of course railroad equipment deteriorated and the expense of partial maintenance was greatly increased. The burden of cost fell upon shippers and the shippers also suffered the injury incident to inadequacy of equipment. The shop leaders caused the deterioration cf equipment, and now they complain about it.

THINK OF THE HORSE These are days when the country is not much exercised over the subject of military

preparedness. But one large increase just made j in the country's military establishment will call j I for general consideration. President Harding ;

has just appointed Irvin S, Cobb a major in the officers reserve corps.

Administration critics may contend the appointment is a funny one. There are some who will insist that Cobb will be the most humorous addition the army has ever had. But there is a serious side to the affair, an element of cruelty.

i not at all in keeping with the fine traditions of

the American armed forces. A major is a field officer, booted, spurred, and entitled, nay obliged, to lide his charger during all the terrific heat cr bitter cold of the days on which the reviews are held. And that's the serious point of commissioning Major Cobb Think of the horse.

OUR DAILY SHORT STORY. His Religion. By Prunella Dinghammer Doaka. A movie hero gave the name of a clergyman as reference in a business transaction. The merchant visited the clergyman and asked for particulars concerning thi financial standing and reliability of his proposed customer. "Indeed." ?aid the reverend gentleman hastily, "I can give you no gua- nlee, my dear sir. I have merely a desultory acquaintance with the gentleman." 'Why, that'r strange," said the merchant perplexedly. "He told me that h attended your church regularly." "11. does," returned the clergyman with a smile. "H always geti

THIS DOES LOOK GOOD In the operation of the going concern known as the United States, there are many products and by-products which cost more or bring less return than the stock-holding public believes

justified. But there is on institution, which year in and year out continues to justify the fondest hopes of the investors. It is the Panama Canal. The annual report of the governor of the Canal Zone, Col. Jay J. Morrow, just made public, presents points for national self-congratula-
