SUHOOL BUSSES

ARE NECESSARY

To even a casual oberrr it is evident that the Board of Education have mad a wise investment In piaeingr the school bus-os on the outskirts of the city to Hlh School and clmentary schools, the buws have become an educational asset of inestimable value. About -oo Pupils are belnc transported to wchool each day, pupil, who live from ttvo to five miles from school. Ifow the Basse are tsed On Excursions Practically every day tha busses may be seen on the streets and roadways about Hammond with loads of children visiting factories, going on excursions and field trips. The following outline shows how extensively these trips have been taken. 1. No field trips: 60 (These trips were mainly by kindergarten and elementary school children, which were taken to farms, woodlands, beaches and sand dunes and other places of interest about the city. -No. trips to Field Museum: 11 . No. trips to Lincoln Park: 5. 4. No. trips to Stockyards. 2 B. No. trips by Hlh Bchool students for purposs of study In Chicago: 10 6. Other special trips transportIns pupils and parents: 8. An accurate record Is kept In thtSuperintendents Office of all the trips. In fact each week there is planned out a schedule of trips which is as accurate as a train schedule. The bus departs and arrives on time. Also there. Is a dally cost record being- kept on each trip and each day. The busses are under direct control f the Board of Education throusrh the office of the Superintendent of Schools. TTie btJ drivers are: Mr. JEd, Murdon Mr. Ovs Puss. What the Teachers ana Pupils Think of the Bawsi The teachers and pupils ar outspoken In their praise of the bus nervine It is resrarded as a distinct

educational asset. The following leUor received -ccently by the K" erintendent of Schools, shows what

ir.c rnnarcn think of thr position:

Tj.fayette School. Sibley and Calumet, Hammond. Indiana. Nov. 21. 1922. Beard of Education. Hammond, Indiana. Dear Sirs. Tlx 7a class of the Iafayette School wishes to thank the School Board for the line of the bus. The class has visited two places of interest. Thr, Straube Piano Factory and Field Museum. Hoth trips wer every educational. The class is more than satisfied with the bus driver. Tie is as careful a driver as co-jld be hired; he is also a regular sport, and at the same lime courteous. Tours truly, Ta Class, KARLOS DICKINSON. Bus Service Kre of C barge There has been a gossipy rumor about town that the Board of Education were charging fares for bus service. This rumor Is merely Idle gossip and Is absolutely untrue. The bus service Is for the schools only

ana the busses have been used only upon trlrs approved by the Superintendsnt of Schools and his assistants. There have been no charges of any kind. The bus drivers are even forbidden to take tips or any ifts of the kind from the students. The bus service is absolutely free and fs limited to the schools. There have been requests for the use of the busses by outside organizations, but these requests have been refused 'or the reason that the Boa-' of Education does not wish to re. or lire the busses. In the school serine the drivers find scarcely time nough to keep the busses washed and overhauled. It should be stated, however, that parents are welcome to go on field trips with children If thy make their wishes known to the principal in time. An Erf deuce of Progress The fact that the busses have been put In use is another evidence of progress in Hammond Education. It is evident to all who observe the situation that Hammond is rapidly forging to a prominent place among representative cities In America. There la no reason why we should not have a foremost school system in Hammond.
