MERGER IS DISCUSSED
Jays Inland Merger With Steel and Tube Is Due Soon By GEORGE V. FOY (Herald and Examiner) Merg-er negotiations between offiiala of the Inland Steel Company nd the Steel & Tube Company of imerica are progressing slowly ut favorably. No official anlouncement is expected until It is leflnitely known what disposition fill be made by the Federal Trade Jomrnlssion of the Bethlehe m-MId-ale consolidation. The amalgamation of Inland and iteel & Tube has been frequently tiscussed during the past year. Unce the Bethlehem-illd vale merrer was announced the matter has eachd a definite stage, it la retorted. Officials of both companies, while iimlttlnr the proposition has been indcr discussion, stated yesterday bat it was still in a tentative tag. From other sources, howr ,!t was learned that the matter tad progressed to the point where ffers had been exchanged, and onferences held by banklntr Intersts to set up a recapitalization Ian. The belief that the merger will be .ccompilshed within a comparativey short time is strengthened by he fact that to complete neogttalons the representatives of the two -ompanles have only to reach a vorliing plan for the exchange of ecurities. Final action will not be lelayed by the necessity of either ompany making an appraljal of heir respective properties. This acion was previously taken as a rerult of the efforts ef Kuhn, Leob "o. and other financial interests to -!nr about the mersrer of the sven Dt KING'S PUIS "jvt constipation Star reJuf from bHioxmar iliHn)i 1 II ii I Mill

largest independent ateel companies some time ago. At that time the stocks of Inland and Steel & Tube were valued at $75 a share each. It Is understood that this basis is again being used and that an equal exchange 01 shares will be made. TWO, PLANTS ADJOIN Steel men point out that the merger would be beneficial In enlarging ihe scope of operations and effecting operating economies, inasmuch as the plants adjoin in Indiana Harbor. From the viewpoint of bank
ers, as well as steel men, the alliance must be brought about eventually as a defensive measure against the increasing growth and power of competing steel plants. The combination would create a formidable rival of the EethlehemMldvale organization and would place the two companies, with combined assets of $160,000,000, well up in the front rank of Independent steel concerns. Steel & Tube is one of the largest of the three manufacturers In the L'nited States of steel pipe and other tubular products. Through a series of mergers the company has acquired a number of important coal and ore mines. The company's steel plant is located In Indiana Harbor, Ind. The preferred is listed on the New York Stock Kichanfe and sold vesterday at $76 a share. The common Is closely held by the Mark and ScMeslnger interests, who control the company.
