A. team in an Interesting contest, SI to 11, and exhibiting: great ly Improved floor work in doing- it. Splendid team work accomplished il-e victory, for it was the accurate passing of the tall which fcert the j'lay almost entirely at the Colonial i:d of the court, and mads possible some pretty shots for the goal: The Hammond team showed the result of a better acquaintance between the Individual members by passing and receiving with apparently little effort, each player seeming to have developed that basket ball instinct which placed him In the proper position, as the occasion required, to co operate with his teammate In running- up a comfortable score-. Long diagonal passing, intermingled with the short and snappy type was the method used by the Colonial fellows In putting over the win. Few of the field goals v. pre the long, lucky brand, but were pi most entirely all the result of !iarp passes to a position under the basket, from whence they were made by that style peculiar to Halladay nnd Sheldon, twisting and writhing, but eventually dropping through for points. Johnny Hurlburt made a fine show lr,g in his first appearance -with the f'olonlals. Last night was the first time he had participated in a basket ball game this season and Ms playing was even better than antl.ipated. Playing the floor guard position, Johnny was all over the court, showering passes on his males who. ha seemed to realize, had a more practiced eye for making goals. Hurlburt made good from tiie first. He worked espcially well with Hall.iday, -with whom he played at the University of Chicago last year. And the style of those two seemed to fit

The applica . of Cbaey Paddock, wonder-sprinte for seven new sprint records has been held up by the Ami. Athletic Union for consideration by the incoming record committee,
which will not meet untP next November. This action was taken after the prt record committee had voted to reject the records on the ground that it was not possible fo: Paddock
or any other hu-nan being tc "run five yard in a fifth of a second." This despite the fait that Paddock's appl! ation was accompanied by affidavits af to correctness of time and ether xeir illation
In well with those old reliables, Thompson, Smith, Scott and Shelton. The game opened with Shelton and Thompson, forwards, Cpt- "Death" Halladay at center, and Scottte playing guard along with Hurlburt. They worked with the smoothness of a well oiled machine, passing beautifully and sinking three goals in the first few minutes of play. Halladay and Shelton worked the court like mil-Americans, while Hurlburt and Scott, with hair in their eyes and every muscle working, fought "era up. Let's hesitate while on the
fighting qualities of those guards
They're somewhat alike, in that each forgets the wholo outside while playing. Deadly in earnest and registering varied facial expressions, Hurlburt and Scottie travel at top speed perpetually. They differ in style In that Hurlburt plays a cyclone, knock 'em dead floor game, while Scott brings his excessive reacli and strength Into prominence by straight out passing from under the goal of the enemy with such promptness that many an opening for the opposing team is nipped In the bud. The half ended with Hammond

He made sii during the period, which with two by Halladay, another by Don Shelton, and a shot by Hurlburt, replacing Thompson, made the total points for the evening 34. SCIENTIST INVENTS CANNON TO SHOOT AUOUNI) CORNERS
By IUtRV GIOOKCJfc! When the shrill call of the referee's whistle sounds tonight at the MoKinley gymnasium, the powerful Kait Chicago Club quintet wiil swing Into action In tho flr.t KRine of what promises to be its greaicsi season on the courts. The fast K. C. U. five Is billed fothe opposition. And while it ii riot tho toughest foeman that could be selected, yet it is tough enough to Uerp the Club's pang- of college stars on the Jump all the time for its bacon. The two tsams, especlaliy J. K. Hart's East Chicaso Club, have been practicing now for the past three or four weeks. Both are exponents of two different styles of play; and both havo thorn down to a careful working basis of precision. The Club's offense and defense at the beginning of tho season will be mainly a five man affair of follow the ball lyno. They will use that

The Mclvinlcy gym doors will be thrown open at 7 o'clock. At 7:30 the Eart "hiea;jo Roomers from Lht Harbor sido of the town will tackle the K. C. I', second crew In the curtain raiser. This battle promises to be an interesting; one because the Roamers have a flock of high school players who know their stuff. Since all the teams to perform on 'he, court tonight have; their own iarf;e following of rooters, Hart is looking forward to a record crowd for the tirht tame.
Is the better team. Reference is made to the Impeding battle? between the K. 1L Orioles of Indiana Harbor and lhe Irving A. C. of Hammond at the Irving .school gym on that night. This game was originally scheduled to be played Dec. 6th, but owing to the reputation of the Harbor lads, the Irving A. C. deemed It wiser to practice a week longer before tackling such a hard proposition. Roth tea.m.3 are studded with former high school stars, so that to the casual observer the game will have the appearance of a high school clash. It night not be amiss to promise the far,3 a corklngly good game as a game between Hammond and East Chicago always develops into a grudge battle. Under the tutelage of Coach Haays the Orioles have been mastering the intricacies of special plays to be srrung on the strong Irving team. The postponement of this game is therefore a blesslns for they cary thus have a lonper time to develop these secret plays. With the knowledge that these plays will confuse the Hammond team, the Orioles are confident of adding another notch to their collection.
