ASKS OPERATION ON SKULLOF CONVICT t Vilv-V0?1- NEWS SERVICE! LLAVL.NWOKTH, Kan., Deo. Staring, dry-eyed, out of the window of her home at the huge grav walls of thfe Federal Penitentiary, wherein her husband. Roy Gardner, daring train robber, Is confined, Mrs. Dolly Gardner s.'ts hour after hour, praying that -Attorney-General Harry il. Daugherty will grant permission for an operation on her husband's skull. The faithful wife said she wants to tay her as long as possible, as the thought of being ar consoles hfcr. Mrs. Gardner believes that In the event her husband Is operated upon and the pressure on his brain removed ho will reform and soon regain his citizenship. Bhe declr ed slx specialists have examined Ro"y, and each of them stated he could be cured of his desire to rob trains. On the other hand. Dr. Yuhe, prison physician, in his report to Attorney-General Daugherty, Indicated that, in his opinion, an operation would not remove Gardner's craving for banditry. Hurt In Mines. "Roy was injured in 190S while working in the Copper Queen Copper Mine at Blsbee, Arizona," Mrs. Gardner explained. "Up until that time he had never committed a crime. He suffered a compound fracture of the skull. "Shortly after that he began h'.s criminal career. Each day he became worse by that I mean more daring. In all of this time Roy had never killed a man. "I have Xray pictures which show that there 13 a piece of bone about eighth of an Inch long pressing against Roy's brain. I will take these with me to Washington If my request for an operation la denied. If necessary I will appeal In person to President Harding for permission for the operation of my darling Koy. "Roy wants to be cured and has consented to the operation, although lie thinks it will mean his death. He is getting old. I noticed many gray hairs In his head when I visited him at the penitentiary. If ho Is kept in there In his present condition he will either die or become hopelessly Insane." Gardner is thirty-eight years old. H'.s father and sister reside at Oklahoma City. Several of his relatives declare he was one of the finest of men until after the cavein at the copper mine In his younger days he attended the University of Colorado. lulled Bis Job Up until 1 920 Gardner was not very widely known.
