4,000 See Strong Elevens Clash at High School Field

The Hammond Sennas and the powerful HeSew!eh eleven battled to a 7 to T tie yesterday afternoon at the high school fle-ld In the most brilliant same that has ever been Played In Hammond. A croTd of approximately 4,000 was on hand from both cities and the Tuji;ey Day contest will long be remembered because of the sensational plays that were shown throughout the heated strug-gle. At the start It was a toss up in naming tha ultimate winner. Both teams were equal In weight ar.d size and not till the final whistle was blown did the fans know that the two bitter rivals had battled on even term: Although balked at many stages in the heated game by the powerful .'catena line. Hegewisch took advanae of following the !ball at every opportunity. The visiting machine carried the oval within .-coring- distance three times, but on at h attempt the Scatena line held like a. stone wall; The visitors were first to score, their lone touchdown coming: in the bird period when Schillo's kick was blocked and the oval was received I - Hegrewlsch on ths 5 yard line. The Fuehrmeyer brothers carried tie plsskln for a 2 yard gain on the third atts:r.pt. J. Fuehrmeyer clashed through the line for a touchdown and O. Fuehrmeyer kicked a pretty one for the extra point. This ended ths scoring for Hegeisch. The visitors -were, satisfied w ith their small margin and began to play the eaxne safe. But Hamitind. stung by the unexpected score, .started a march that took the breath out of fans and players i fourth rp.arter opened

up one could easily see that the Hammond players were out to do something and what they did will Ions linger in the minds of the many local followers. U wa Ham made up for it with a 5 yard irain glnS through the ,ure carr I ' " l6ft end' niel. S M ? t Val f0r first- down-it-hi lo rushed through for 9 yard Daniel, making another down on a line riling-,. .veiMn was out for a rnmute with a bad hand, but re vt ,0;Uy,Ut' Wae off 3 jards off tackle and made i more on the same play. SchiUo was finally stopped and the Scatena players who were smashing their wav through for steady gains had to give up on the 30 yard line when three straight passes were missed. Hegewisch got the ball and was penalized 15 yards for holding The ova! rested on the 15 yard line with Hegewisch In possession. O Fuehrmeyer's punt fell short and Hammond recti v-i the pigskin on the 2j yard line. Warne missed a pretty pass from Cearing:. Hammond was penalized 5 yards for off side. Sidenbecker went In for Warne. Cear-irg-s pass to Worland wa, broken up. SchUlo punted to He-ewisch Bingo fumbled and ; ; ud received the oval re ins ,-o the 10 yard line. Two lir.e plaj netted nothing, and on the t'.trd pday Ccaring shot a pretty pa?., io W. Sjdenbeckers waiting arms over the line for Hammond's score. Cearing tied the score with a neat boot between the bars. Hammond a'.l through the game threatened the Hegewisch goal line. On four different occasions Hammond playera had the ball within scoring distance, but In each attempt the Hegewisch line held as never before. In the opening period the Scatenas' revamped lineup showed signs of life, but fumbles on the part pf the backfield were murderous. This was mainly due to the soggy Held, the first half of the contest being played In a driving rain storm. The strength of the two teams were about equal. Both teams opened up with frequent rasses without much success. Hammond's backfield looked stronger, but the three Fuehrmeyer brothers certainly did valiant work all through the game. Cearing, lJrunistead Nelson and W. Sldenbecker were- the outstanding stars of the Scatenas. The team as a vvhole was a far better one that had faced Kast Chicago several days :igo.
