iwniy prominent business men
of Hammond, Ind., who came to .South Bend yesterday afternoon to -onfer with the Chamber of Commerce In an effort to secure Information upon which to build a suh-s-tantlal organization of similar character in Hammond returned to their homes last evening- wholly satisfied that in selecting the South Uend Chamber of Commerce as a model upon which to build they had made no mistake. They returned saturated with information of a valuable character, imbued with the idea that the South Bend organization is an energetic and progressive one and more enthusiastic than ever iVfr the possibilities in Hammond with an effective association. The business men arrived shortly after noon and were tendered a dinner !n the Chamber of Commerce building. Former Mayor Fred W. Keller presided. He made a brief address of welcome which waa responded to by C. Kaufmann, president of the Hammond Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Kaufmann in responding- to Mr. Keller pointed out that the Hammond organisation is being rejuvenated and is, therefore, pleased to secure Information from South Pend. Other cities have been visited but it was the decision to make a study of the South Eend organization because it seemed to function so satisfactorily. The men who are b'ack of the Hammond chamber are willing to serve and to be a benefit to that city, he said. BE.KEHT TO ALL CITIES Mr. Kaufmann expressed the belief that such gatherings as that of the day and such co-operation as was offered were a benefit to all tht-
cities of this section. He eaid great development was expected In the Calumet region. A cordial invitation wis extended to the South Bend organization to visit Hammond. Brief talks were also made by George A. Robertson, director of the local organization; "Walter M. Hildebrand, chairman of Its public affairs committee, and F. A. Miller, its first president, A. M. Turner, representing the Hammond chamber, spoke briefly expressing the appreciation of the visitors of what had been done for them. Fnllowln? the dlrner the Ham
mond men adjourned to the office of Frank J. Green, manager of the Chamber of Commerce, where three hours were spont in informal discussion. Mr. Green was on his feet most of the tims going- into careful detail as he explained the organization of the South Bend chamber ard Its various functions. HQ pointed out what It has done and what it Is doing In South Bend and made It clear to the visitors that Hammond
can do the same things and la much the same way.
tress was laid upon the trafTc
department and Mr. Green pointed out that more than $18,000 in freight over-charges has been returned to South Bend business men in the last ten months, something like $4,000 of this sum going to one concern, the Northern Indiana Gas & Electric Company. The heads of various departments in the chamber were invited to the meeting to explain the methods of hose departments, this information being regarded as of value to the visitors. Hammond having no organization similar to South Bend's Federation for Social Service, Miss Helen Gregory, managing head of the federation, was invited to address the visitors. She explained In detail how the organization is conducted, what it has done and its present activi
ties.
