Few of ua In our busy lives have stopped to consider what a wonderfully fine thtn we have in the Alice Club hero In Hammond. We may possibly know that there Is such a place, but we need only one visit to this pleasant placo to realize its charms. For those of U3 who do not know of it, it mi.ht be well to say tiiat tho tlub Is -ju Indiana avenue in a most convenient place for tho girls who live there to reach. It was founded possibly some ten years ago when Viiginia frlrooks was doing her work In Hammond. The present property on Indiana avenue was given by F. S. Botz and the club bearing the name of the "Alice Club" was named for Mrs. F. S. Betz. ' Upon visiting the Alice Club at the dinner hour one is struck with t lie pleasan'ness of the place. Tintwelve young women who are living tlwre at present find splendid food tttidy for them at one large folksy table where they are served a dinner which would tempt even those with a small appetite. Mlsa Mary Rist, the genial house mother, of whom all of the Alice Club giri. are fond, takes her place at tluhead of the group with a dignity befitting one in her position. In the sleeping quartera upstairs one would not ask for more comfortable rooms. Each girl has her roommate and the two girls have added the tiny touch to their rooms :o characteristic of a woman's hand. The Aiice Club, whose object Is to house girls In a comfortable way for a slight fee, asks flvo and a half dollars a week for board and room from each girl. A happy koIijtion has been reached on the question of the privileges of hours for the pirls. Everyone is expected to be In at tfn thirty o'clock every
ni,;ht except Thursday and Sunday evenings, when midnight is the hour. The giils have given hearty co-operation in enforcing- these rules. The Alice Club, with M.rs. Joseph G. Jbacli. Mrs. V. J. McAleer, Mrs. Oscar Krlnbill, Mrs. Ray Chapman, Mrs. George Ctapin, Mrs. Ralph C. Pierce, Mrs. F. S. Betz, Mrs. C. Kaufman. Mrs. Leo Aolf, Mrs. J. F. Beckman, Mrs. George Jlannauer, Miss Alta Adkins, Mrs. W. C. Belman, Miss Jennie Mabbs, Mrs. M. P. Stewart, Mrs. A. F. Rf lircr and Mm. L. L. Bomhcrger as directors, has taken great steps forward, but even vet there is a great work to bo done which the unfortunate lack of support and OTilpnunt has prohibited. lo we, who I ride ourselves upon being- -wide awake citizens, app'-.--ciato how we could help with the Alice Club iy making It a mot livable place than it is now? The ladies of the Hammond Country Club are to enjoy a bridge party tomorrow afternoon at two thirty o'i do, k. Mrs. John live- Is to act as hostess for thn afternoon.

Tho alumnae of the All faints
hich srhool held an interesting r-etiptr on Wednesday evening at
the school hall. Arrangements wera made for a bunco paity and dance to be given on Friday evening, November the twenty-fourth, at the K. of C. club rooms, for which big plans are being' made. A large and enthusiastic crowd of mothers of West Hammond were present nt the opening baby clinic of the child welfare department held at the Memorial hall, at whicn time Dr. Wlnholt, a baby specialist of Chicago, gave an interesting and educational talk on babyhood. The Child We'.arc Fociety of Wesn Hammond, which has already done so many worth while things, has launched a contest among the mothers of West Hammond to stimulate even mo-e interest In the clinic work than ever. Prizes have been offered to the mother who attends the most clinics with r.er baby, and also to the baby who shows tho most gain in three months' time. Miss Bailey, tho West Hammond nurse, talked on the value of a baby clinic interestingly. There were a number of Coicatro visitors there as
well as visitors from other nearby towns. Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Carter of Webb street are announcing- the marriage of their daughter Mary to Robert L, Hooker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Hooker of Shawneetown, Illinois. The ceremony took place at tho North Shore Esptist church In Chicago at noon on Tuesday, November the fourteenth, with the Reverend V. H. Jones officiating.
