By LARRY GEORGE "What makes a football team a football team? Tbls sounds like a phoney riddle or like the opening sentence of a learned treatise on the fundamentals of th grid sport. However, it is neither. It is merely a rhetorical nloety designed to grab your flitting Interest In order to slide th rest of our stuff down your sport lntestlnals so as to leave a pleasing taste In your mouth. To come back to our original question of "what makes a football team a football team?" our answer is by playing the toughest opposition they can find and still come out ahead In the score column. All other answers when compared to this one pale Into Insignificance becauje it presupposes them. It Is a material shortcut a tangible something to all rerr-.a!n.'ng theories, arguments or beliefs.

If the opposition has the same degree of the qualities Just named, or possibly a trifle better degree of those qualities than has the first team, then, in the comparative sense, the other team is just as good or is better than the first team. Howlver. if the first team can hang the Indian sign on the second team and on every team thereafter like the eecond team, then tho first team is THE football team and the others, superlatively speaking, are not. This may still sound like so much hokus pokus to our patient readers. If that is the case, we shall try to apply a little of our book knowledge in order to make our point more clear. The book says, "When you cannot make yourself understood In straight descriptive discourse, use an example of every day occurrence to bring out your point." Therefore, kindly consider the concrete case of "the East Chicago Dodgers now readers, do not leave us yet; we are getting down to the bottom of our day's work. The East Chicago Dodgers have speed, science and brains in its personnel; yet, so did every team that the Dodgers have played this year possess those attributes. In fact, the majority of them were Invariably rated as more proficient in those virtues than were the Dodgers. Yet, the Dodger have been rolling along all season on the top of every battle that has been scheduled. They were either returned a material victory or In one specific tie affair, they were unanimously accorded a moral victory. F CINCH FIRST PLACE Iast night the Bedford Shirts bowling club put on their stuff and won three games, but the three games were not the kind of games this club usually turns out. For the first game they only knocked down S63 pins, while In the second game they knocked down 833 pins and the last game 791 pins. This club has an average of 032 for 27 games, so you can easily see they have tohave an off night. Why our old friend Eddie came in with as many pins In the last game as Andy Gump got votes, one-'twenty-two, and Eddie shakes a mean nib. Then the captain got lucky and carried away the "buck" with a score of 181. which should bo the lowest game Instead of the highest. Clarence Bates filled in for Ned Nelson, while Ned was packing away 656 pins in the Bruck league at 63rd and Halstead, and helping his team win three games. On next Tuesday night at 8:30 at the Jackson Park alleys there will be one of the hottest bowling matches ever pulled off on their alleys, when Poo. Clark's Jackson Park five will meet tho Bedford Shirt five. This game has been hanging fire ever since the schedule was drawn up and It will be another case of come early and get your seats or wait down stairs and get the returns off the bowlers as they pass out. In support of this comes the report from Philadelphia that Centre had requested a game on the Penna schedule for next season. Just why Harvard, having previously declared Itself on the lntersectJonal proposition, should wish to dispose of an opponent that has drawn upwards of 1 50.000 to the

stadium in three seasons is not altogether clear. But it Is evident that Centre College, In tn a k 1 n povertures to Pennsylvania, has seen the well known handwriting on the equally well known wall. It is said that Harvard means to replace Centra with the best attraction the great open spaces of the west affords. Michigan, Wisconsin and Notre Dame were mentioned tentatively, as possible opponents that might be lured to the Harvard stadium with slick city talk about great honor and greater gate receipts. The team or teams to be approached in this artful manner will be determined by their success or fallura In the remaining games of the season. It Is said that Notre Dame Is favored above all others because of Its great record during recent years and Its interesting style of play. Tb Hoosiers would fill the stadium Just as surely as Centra has done for three consecutive seasons and one cannot infuriate the Harvard athletic officials in this manner.
