A RECORD THAT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. American voters need no aid from politicians to determine the party whose comparative merits entities it to their support at the polls tomorrow. In. past campaigns, the records of contending parties may have been beclouded to an extent that invited the political orator to carry imagination to the limit In stressing claims of the organization that he championed and in belittling those cf the opposition. But not so in 1922. The proof of a pudding is in the eating and the proof of a political party's superiority is in its achievements, as proved by bettered conditions. This is a test that is conclusive with practical-minded, level-headed voters every where, no matter how much the politicans may attempt to sidetrack it. Any unbiased observer can look around and see the improvement in economic and industrial and business conditions- and, comparing what is thus seen with what is remembered as to the depressed and depressing situation in which the country was left struggling by the democratic regime, car.not escape the conclusion that the party in control has served the nation with efficiency and zeal that entitle it to "continuing support, for services rendered and to be rendered. This is not republican argument. It is economic, patriotic argument that is based on conditions as they now exist and are tending. The relief of agriralture, which, on coming into power, the republican party found in dire straits, the smoothing cut of differences over which opposing industrial elements were then clashing the improvement of business which, at this time, was floundering in slough of
'despond, the revival of industry thai was then I
depressed and the consequent demobilization of!
the army of unemployed, the general betterment cf financial conditions which were rapidly lowering to the panic level, the lightening of taxation which was crushingly heavy under the preceding regime, the impressive economics in army and navy and the great saving effected by the establishment cf the budget system, the enactment of a permanent tariff that promises to carry on the prosperity stimulation that proved so effective under the emergency tariff and will operate with a flexibility that insures the nation against injustice in its application, the pursuit of foreign policies that have avoided embarrassments and, by demonstrated effectiveness, have restored the nation's confidence in government dealing with outside problems such is a partial list cf results and achievements
under republican guidance that speak louder than wcrds and with more eloquence than that possessed by the greatest stump spellbinders in support of the party in control. If any administration ever has proved itself
deserving of the electorate's continuing supportthe Harding administration has done so, as its ! record of service witnesses. And realization j of this should carry with it realization of the j advisability of returning a republican, congres- j sional majority, to the end that the nation may have the advantage of its continuing service, j unhampered by partisan opposition. This docs j not mean that the republican party's claims to ! support in the congressional election rest solely j on the administration's record, and the promise I
held by that record, but that it is strengthened by it. On its own legislative account the majority party in congress has established convincing title to the electorate's support partisan critics to the contrary notwithstanding. While the sixty-seventh congress might have done more, it" accomplished much in the way of promoting achievement, or rather nonachievement, under Democratic control, the credits of the Republican party in congress impressively stand out as urging its claims to favorable verdict at the pollsAs all America knows, the situation that confronted the Republican party on its accession to power on March 4, 1921, was difficult. Ae a result of the Democratic regime, mismanagement and uneconomic and unbusinesslike direction of public affairs the nation was struggling under a depression that threatened basic industries with disaster and its interests with serious injury. Wild extravagance in government had imposed on the country's taxpayers burdens that were crushing. Unemployment was a menacing problem and agriculture was in a dangerous situation as a result of the ill-advised plan of post-war adjustment that was pursued by the Wilson administration. The problem that awaited the Republican party on its coming into control was to salvage the nation, to save from the wreckage what could be saved and get America's steps in paths leading to recovery and to prosperity. Thb it promptly set about doing, as the record shows. The electorate can see for itself the turn of conditions for the better that has taken place under Republican administration and can see for itself the promise of continuing improvement held by the permanent tariff, which is emphasized by the promotion of national interests under the emergency tariff, and by other constructive legislation. These facts of record and the manifest betterment of national conditions can not be disposed by the Democras wih partisan arguments. The American voters remember the conditions under which the nation was struggling twenty months ago conditions for which the Democratic party was largely responsible and, remembering this can not fail to conclude that the party which Has led the nation upward to prosperity deserves support. Truly a party's actions its achievements in government and the benefits that it works in behalf of the nation speaks louder than partisan words and the record of the Republican party along this line speaks in trumpet tones.

POLITENESS PAYS
The bur-g-u-lars are most polite These days, the papers say. They treat their victims very white And have a charming way. They hand them smelling-salts and such And tie 'em up with silk That's soft ana yielding to the touch. They honor whom they bilk. They sav: "Now, madam, please be" rtill And don't say anything. While we go through your private till
( Please nass that dinner ring).
For really I'm a polished gent, I know the ethics wjll. But in your dome I'll make a dent If you let out a yell. "I know that you will gladly part With all your jewels now If I, with hand upon my heart. Pull off a courtly bow. True courtesy is scarce Indeed, Folks try the other way. Us puys, we are the only ones Who make politeness pay."
The repugnance to jury dutv is rapidly passing, we believe. In Boston the other dav a iury in a liquor case was given one quart. oZ rve and one quart of rin. and after deliberating over the evidence in the jury room, returned, a verdict of "not guilty.' Ihe evidence presented by the defendant was sufficiently strong to clear him. One New York candidate is accused of beino; a "flopper." The. worst will not come until they call him a "flapper. But this will not be an old-fashioned winter so far as prices ar concerned Some juries get very -Vepy. For instance, there is one referred to by a New York paper whe.i it said: "He spent the terrible threehour interval while the iury was out taking a nap in his eel!.' The language of love is inexplicable. In her letters. the chor singer referred to her portlv and bald-headed pastor as "my cute babykins." In his reply, he said: "Crown me king of the gypsies. They say that love is blind. It must also be cuckoo. Scientist says a shark is harmless if you keep him entertained. About the only way you can entertain a shark is to Jet him bite a lew of your legs off. Met the real old-fashioned fellow the other evening. It looked like rain so he had discarded the straw hat with the trolley attached ind was sport'ng the heavy, white satin-lined derby while carrying nn umbrella. He wore that old-fashioned cimbination, the black coat and vest accompanied bv the striped trousers, winged celluloid collar and little made-up bow tie attached to the collar button. On taking off li coat he. as usual, forgot to take that little wire arrangement from heneath his coat collar, and that article released from it duty of keeping the collar shared flew across the room and imbedded itself in the wall. In the excitement the little, black, laundry collar button fell from its position as stud in his shirt front, and the toothpick dropned from behind his ear. He said he wore woolen underwear all Bummer, he had heard of B. V. D.'s once, but thought it was a radio station in Newark. He has never shaved himself and has his own cup, with the gilded monocrram on, in the barber shop. His faith in oldhome remedies is wonderful, and he still wears his right sock around his neck to relieve a sore throat. He's old-fashioned enough to keep hi3 money in a savings bank AND HE STILL HAS IT.

That out-of-town order, which must be delivered quickly, and on which the price must be known at once, can be placed best by Long Distance telephone. Over Bell wires the buyer can state exactly what he wants and be told immediately the price, and conditions of delivery. He can determine at once if the commodity he wants is obtainable within his time limit and, if not, what substitute the seller has to offer. In a word, before he hang's up the receiver, the buyer can know what he is getting, at what price, and how soon delivery may be expected. "Station-to-station" service is a money and time saver. It is explained in the current issue of the Alphabetical Telephone Directory.
