Magnuson Appointed At a meeting of the Bast Chicago Park Board foeld this week Gardner Alfred Magnuson was appointed as acting Park Superintendent to fill an existing vacancy caused by the board accepting the resignation of Leo Romansky last month. Ray Stuibbs was appointed acting park engineer, secretary and purchasing agent of the board. These appointments are said to be temporary with a possibility of permanent appointments being made next spring.
Dr. Robinson PIsns Trip Dr. C. C. Robinson physician and surgeon of Indiana Harbor expects to make an extended tour of South America In company with other members of the American College of Surgeons the early part of February, next. It was while attending a convention of this surgical society at Boston last week that plans were made by its members to visit South America, where the party will make a study of the health and hospital conditions In the tropical and temperate lones of the lower Hemisphere. A special boat has been chartered to accomodate the surgeons and their immediate families.

Indiana Harbor, reported to the Harbor police that one of his roomers struck him In the head with a hammer while he lay In bed and then robbed the house. Another call from this place brought the police to the same address to find Hanley, complaining that some one had entered his house and stole J10 in cash and a gun. An investigation by the police of these charges has failed the truth in such complaints.

Bound Over. Robert Bennett and John Glazer, two Chicago men arrested by the Hammond police this week when found wtth stolen goods in their possession belonging to Albert Glvern. of East Chicago, were bound over to the Lake county criminal court under $1,000 hail, when appearing in the East Chicago city court at a preliminary hearing .before Judge Allen P. Twyman yesterday afternoon. Albert Givern, owner of the Givern Pants factory. Identified Robert Bennett, one of the alleged burglars, as a man who had applied at his factory a few weeks before the robbery for a position as pressman. He said that he was positive that Bennett was th - same man. It is the natural presumption that when Bennett made this visit he laid his plans for the burglary of the place, which was made on the night of October 21. The bookkeeper of tht Givern Pants Factory also testified that Bennett was the same person who had applied for work at their factory. Fu.rr;e Oivei ehare-es that Jackson, one of the attorneys for the defendants, offered a bribe of several hundred dollars to his father If he would duash the case and not appear against tho two men. No particulars have been learned as to the cause of his death. The Woman's Missionary Society of the Congregational church, held a most lnferesting meeting yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. II. T. Power on North Magoun avenue. The president, Mrs. E. N. Canine, who Just returned from a meeting in Cleveland, gave a splendid report of the year's work In the int rlor states. It was also the annual election of officers, which resulted In all the old officers being re-elected except the secretary, Mrs. Spencer, who finds It Impossible to attend to this duty. Mrs. E. N. Canine was elexted president: Mrs. G. W. Lewis, vice-president; Mrs. G. C. Smith, treasurer, and Mrs. H E. Jackson, secretary. At the close of thi meeting the hostess served a delicious lunch. Dainty refreshments were also a pleasing feature of the evening. The oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Orln McCrea of North Magoun avenue, is 111 with pneumonia. Mrs. J. E.-Coons and her two daughters, Bessie and Dorothy, returned to East Chicago last Tuesday of this week from Denver and surrounding points, visiting her relatives, among them her mother, Mrs. Geo. Tost, who has been In 111 health for some time. Mrs. Coons had the pleasure of not only seeing wild game such as deer brought down from the mountains in pairs to Ft. Collins on automobile, but had the pleasing of eating same at her brother's, Fred Wilt's stock farm, at Llvermore.
