(BY HAROiX CROPS) Opportunity is knocking at th doo?. Ilap-rap-rap. What does the Caluroet avenue property owner and tmalness man do? Does he open the portals and extend a welcome hand? No. Ha says: "Why that can't be Opportunity? Ha won't be here for five or ten years. That fellow Is an Impost or." Thni's -what Is the matter. Caltf rr.ct avenue property owwrs ar.4 rusinesss men have let other people talk iTisin Into believing: that tlity vv.ll have to rait five or ten years before Opportunity arrives. They are waiting for Something to happen: Why don't they make SOMETHING HArPEX? The fact is that that something will not happen until they cause it to happen. Calumet avenue would be a narrow poorly paved street with an old rickety bridge and a sewer on top of the ground If the property owners hadn't Joined tog-ether and pot the improvements put through. THEY BOLT THE SIDEWALK AND THE DOORSTEP FOR OPPORTTTXITY TO WALK UPON' AND NOW THAT OPPORTUNITY IS AT THE DOOR THEY REFUSE TO BELIEVE IT. The only way to do Is to seize opportunity by the neck and yank him inside before he goes elsewhere. WHY DEIATr The very thing that made Calumet avenue what it Is today is lacking now. That thing- Is leadership, enterprise and co-eprMc-n- It was Councilman Dave Boone and the Kleventh Ward Improvement Association with the co-operation of other improvement associations that raised Calumet avenue out of the ruts. Dave Boone Is gone ajwl tlie Eleventh Ward Improvement Association is dormant. If the property owners and business men of Calumet avenue would form an association and put at its head a real "go-get-em" live wire they could perform wonders. Why should Calumet avenue wait five or ten years? Eventually, why not now? If it Is going to be the most important business etreet . in the Calumet region, why shouldn't it be that now?
The A. & P., the Consumers and other chain stores have established themselves on Calumet avenue? Why not a department store? There are too many pessimists around who complain. "It costs too
, much to build." With business on j the up-grade and a long stretch of
prosperity ahead, is there any reason to believe that building costs will decrease? If anything they will ?tart up again. There is a shortage of labor and wanes are roinir u.
niigh prices and high wages are here
to stay, and so are high rents. Of course it costs mors to build than it did ten years ago and ten years ago it cost more to 1 ; "1 than It did ten years b-' For that matter there aa day when rhoice store rooms rented for ?25 a month. If Calumet avenue property owners and iv. jrch&nts are going to let any old argument dis-
I courage them they don't deserve to
have Opportunity knock at the door. LETS BS OPTIMISTS WTiat this town needs is a whole lot of red blooded optimists and not a lot of white blooded pessimists. Here we are the hub of the greatest industrial district in the United Stated, the trading center of a territory of over 100,000 people. Hammond's population doubled in fifteen years and she is growing faster than rver. Business is good, merchants are prosperous and the banks have 11 kinds of money. When times are tough and there are scoresof bankruptcies in nearby towns, there are ew If any failures in Hammond. Get together Calumet avenue property owners and merchants. Form a real boosters organization. Put some money into it. Don't be afraid of what people might say. Down in your hearts you believe that Calumet avenue is going to be the greatest street in this region. If you didn't believe that you wouldn't have Invested your money. Show some pep. Do things. Why. out in Oklahoma City the boosters had nerve enough to put up a sixteen story hotel when that town had. about 55,000 people and that hotel made money. It would do Calumet avenue property owners a lot of good to visit iome of th enterprising cities In the west and see how they do things.
