will realize that, for the welfare of all, we must live and let live, must give and take, and must stand united for all America.
A QUESTION OF LOCAL SELFISHNESS. - It is a remarkable fact that during the fnak-
Ving of sour new tariff bill, every Democratic
senator but one voted for protective tariff on some one or more articles. Just what were the things on which each chose to have tariff protection, can be determined by a study of a produce map of the United States. !; For instance, in Democratic states where rice is grown, the Democratic free trader wanted protective tariff on rice, that the producers of his locality might not have to meet the low grade 'competition of China. He did not want our markets flooded with this cheap rice so that 4home rice producers would find no sale in the American markets for their rice. ! The same thing is true of other products grown in Democratic states. From tobacco state, on tobacco; from peanut states, on peanuts, and so with other products. However, these Democratic senators, favoring a protective tariff on the products of their own locality, were unwilling to have a tariff placed on the products of other localities
What kind of a government would it bei
which looked out for the people of one district, but neglected the welfare of others? Z It is as though a citizen would say, "I am for a fire department to protect the houses in my block, but I will not vote for a fire department to protect the rest of he city." Or, "I
I favor a police force to guard my family, but flam not for a police force to guard others." Such
is the spirit of the man who prayed, "Lord, bless me and my wife, my son John and his wife, us four and no more." ' It is the part of broad minded statesmanship tq look well to the interests of all parts of the country, and not to give undue consideration or "favoritism to any locality. "United we stand, divided we fall" is a gdod old American phrase and just as worthy I a' principle of government today as it was the day it was first promulgated. - Tariff is a subject requiring careful study in its detail, to work out a tariff law which shall give ample protection to all those industries needing it and shall work a hardship on none. This is why it has taken a long time to frame i the present tariff law. It is the first "scientific" tariff that is, based on the findings of the tariff commission. This is assurance that it will be, more nearly than former laws, fair to all localities and industries.
V To make certain of its fairness further, it is
an elastic larm xaw. l ne president is empowered, upon recommendation of the tariff commission, to raise or lower rate3 as the interests : of the country demand. Without local selfishness, it has been the iaim of the republican party to make a tariff i law which shall protect the industries of all ; America, east, west, north, and south; the farmer, the laborer, the manufacturer; all of us whose interests are bound together. ; " Pre-eminently, the republican party has always been nonsectional. Fair-minded citizens
ANYBODY SEEN HIM? It is surprising how often the Boy Scouts of America is called upon to help locate lost or runaway boys. The aid of the organization is asked at this time in the endeavor to discover the whereabouts of a boy named John Dixon (nicknamed "Jack,") of Brooklyn, N. Y. Jack, it seems, wrote his parents on a postal card, postmarked St. Paul, on September 29, 1922, that he was on his way to Chicago. Up to this date he has not been heard from nor seen, although there has been a general alarm spread through various sources. He is sixteen years old, five feet seven inches tall, weighs, 135 pounds, has blonde curly hair, black eyebrows and eyelashes. When last seen he was dressed in a black wool sweater and sheepskin coat, brown army shoes, and his underwear was marked with his full name. His home address is 102 Berkeley Place, Brooklyn, N. Y. Anybody who can help place the boy will confer a great favor by writing to the above address or to the national headquarters of the Boy Scouts of America, 200 Fifth avenue, New York City.
MODERATION THE NEED. In deciding to use argument and persuasion rather than militant onslaughts and recriminations in continuing its efforts for adjusted compensation for world war veterans, the Amenci Legion adopted a policy of moderation that is based on common sense. The fight for and against the bonus has developed too much bitterness. The campaign has been characterized by such phrases as "looters of the treasury," from one side, and "profiteers and. ingrates" from the other. Nothing was gained for either side by this bitterness. Indeed, much was lost, for the controversy was shifted from the realm of reasons to that of emotions. The bonus question, like all others affecting the public interest, should be discussed ond acted upon according to its merits, without regard to the motives of some of its supporters or opponents. When the issue is beclouded with immaterial charges and countercharges there is little hope of reaching a rational decision. The Legion, in announcing its policy, did not criticise the president for vetoing the bonus measure, nor those who opposed its passage, recognizing, apparently, as most observers have, that their opponents in this matter are for the most part like the majority of the American Legion members, actuated by a sincere desire to serve the best interests of the country-
A STUNNING VICTORY. "Governor McRae sweeps Arkansas" says a headline. This should have immediately been followed by a blast from Chairman Hull of the democratic national committee declaring that the Harding administration had been repudiated by the election of a democratic governor of Ar-kan-sass. Judging from Hull's attitude the republican party will be completely undone if Mississippi "should by any chance go democratic.
The Earl of Balfour slept through a meeting of the council of the League of Nations. This is all the proof that was needed that it is a bush league.
Bryan's brother has been nominated for governor of Nebraska Democrats, but this has not yet been heralded as a victory for the anti-evolutionists.
