DECREASE IN INDIANA
INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICE INWANAl'OiJS, Del. A tortyfive per cent decrease in the Indiana death rate from tuberculosis in the pa3t five years- was announced by Secretary Murray Kuerbach. of the Indiana tuberculosis association. There were 1.268 fewer deaths In 1921 from the white plagrue than ,'n 1917. Anti-tuberculosis work, featu-ing simple education for protection ag-ainst the disease, lias ha..l much to do with thin decided reduction in the tuberculosis toll, Mr. Kuerbach naid. "rr!(hty-elKht counties now have active organizations carrying on perpetual warfare against the "We have held clinics this year in sixty-five counties, and the modern health crusade in the schools is in progress In the same number of counties. Nurslnjr service has been made available In thirty-five counties and there are sanatorium provisions In eleven counties. These things, nil of thefci mado possible by the yearly sales of penny Christmas Heals, are due to consistent and persistent efforts by volunteer workers. "The figures are as startling: as they arc gratifying. In 1917. there were 3.989 deaths in Indiana f'om tuberculosis, and the decrease lias been steady. ----"The fljr.tres are, for 1S18, 8.606; 1919, 3.26S; 1920, S.1S1, and for 1321, 2.712. Trie death rate in 1917 was 137.7 per 100.000 of population, but In 1SI1 It ht-d been brought down to 92.8 per 100,000 of population. "Indiana has reason to be proud of this firure, for it means not only Fteady improvement in conditions, hut a front rank in the nation as recardd antl-tuberculosis effort. But even so. there Is a great deal to bf! done. "The loss of 2,712 lives, most of them needlessly, means an economic v. astsse of approximately 110, 000, 0?Q to the state. It behooves the people of Indiana to continue the program and even enlarge upon it. to t ut down the ravages of the plague.'1
