FIGURES ARE DECEIVING ,Some member of the "Round Numbers and End to Enders Club" has compiled an interesting set of figures to show how much a woman's work comes to in the ordinary round of 30 years of household duties. . At the end of 30 years of married life, we

learn the average woman has served 500,000

meals. She has put up more than 3,000 jars of preserves; made 32,850 beds: swept more

than a million square yards of floor space, and

dusted furniture enough to fill several warehouses. The time devoted to sweeping and

dusting and scrubbing is to be estimated at not

less, than 35,000 hours.

For this particular statistician these figures lead to the query "And what has she ac

complished after all this labor; is she even

perrhitted to retire with a pension after all this

work?" As a matter of fact it is nrnhahlv tmc

that most women could not be tempted to retire

at fhe end of 30 years of household work, and

if they were pensioned they would want to be

lven something else to keeo them busy. In

which respect they are like most men-

vBut in the matter of figures it must be re

membered that these things are meaningful only by comparison. Formidable as woman's household duties look when thus totaled over a per

iod of years the numbers look less imposing

when compared to other similar figures. At the rate of 1,600 bricks a day for 300 days a

year a bricklayer will lay 14,400.000 bricks in 30 years. The number of miles covered by a

postman in his daily round over a period of 30

years would probably make our feet ache from

the very reading of it.

This sort of game has infinite possibilities.

We might take the case of an elevator girl in a

20- story building. Ascertain the number of

Strips she makes a day, the number of days in

b year for 30 years. Calculate these trips in

pumber feet traveled upward; reduce to number

jof miles, and if for a period of 30 years the total Idistance traveled upward is less than 35,000

piles, it is only because the elevator is the slow-

Jest one in the world . And there is no ?uch ele

vator.

' And figures are deceiving.

GOOD WORK BY MELLON Another issue of low-interest bearing government refunding bonds has been oversubscribed. Subscriptions were nearly three times the available issue. The experience of many who sold their Liberty bonds to Invest the proceeds in other securities has taught them the value of bonds backed by Uncle Sam. Secreary Mellon's refunding and retirement plans have been so far successful that in the interval between April 30, 1921, and September 30, 1922, the gross public debt had been reduced from 24 million dollars to $22,800,000,000 and about $4,000,000,000 of the early maturing debt had been retired or refunded. Gradually the escretary of the treasury has put the nation's financial house in such order that the huge

amount of obligations maturing within the next 12 months will prove no embarrassment. All will be discharged according to contract. New bond issues will be in order periodically, but the total amount of upblic indebtedness will constantly decline and the interest burden on taxpayers will be reduced with the restoration of general business to normal that will be marked by diminshing costs of money. All these operations should be studied by the people since they afford usual opportunities for learning the fine points of financing with one of the highest authorities in the country in the role of instructor while he serves the public interest practically and patriotically.

RULES OF WAR. A commission appointed by the Washington confernece on the limitation of armaments is to meet at The Hague to consider changes in the rules on international warfare. Its conclusions are expected to be accepted by the leading powers, who will propose to all other nations that they be made a part of recognized international law. Any movement to limit the horrors of warfare deserves the highest commendation and most enthusiastic support. A commission with the authority held by this one may well arouse hope. Laws, however, must be enforced to be useful, and international law is the most difficult of all law to find the power to enforce it. There is only one such power, and that is public opinion; and it must be practically universal to be effective. Such a power suppressed the use of dum-dum bullets in the Spanish-American war, and again in the world war. But public opinion in its turn is inspired by motives which decide its character. In quiet times of peace it is very sane and humanitarian, but in the time of war hot patriotism sanctions any method to win, no matter how inhuman. The only effective method to control warfare is to make war impossible. Public opinion alone can ddthat. It is too much to expect such a radical change suddenly. But it is to be hoped that the forthcoming commission will prove a step toward it.

The Universal Implement Forty years ago the telephone was a luxury. Today, it has become a necessity within the reach of everybody. Where once a business house had one telephone with a limited talking range, today that business house has a service with the range of a continent and every branch of every business is linked to every other by an intercommunicating telephone system. This vast extension of the limits of telephone communication has opened up a wide range of uses for Bell long distance service. The long distance service is equally useful in making a social engagement in the suburbs or closing an important business deal in New York, Boston or San Francisco.

Station-to-station ' service is a money and time saver. It is explained in the current issue of the Alphabetical Telephone Directory.
