to the Jtusaian government, which have cargoes taken on at Liverpool and Hamburg-, Under present plans the fleet will carry approximately 10,000 tons of cargo, including agricultural machinery of an estimated value of $730,000. Listed among the consignments aboard the Trotsky and

Arcos are 20,000 ploughs, saws an4 other timber-working tools, l.uuo tons of sheaf-bindir twine, chemicals for Manning hides and skins, and shotguns and rifles for hunting. All this material Is urgently needed by the peasants of eastern Siberia, which is scarcely touched by railroads. The fleet will be accompanied by the ice-breaker Lenin, which has just been fitted out at Newcastle, England. Since the presence of ice prevents entering the mouths of the Obi and Yenisei rivers except during about ix weeks of the season, the expedition must be exceedingly well timed. The fleet expects to leave Immediately and to be back in European waters by the middle of October. DEPOTS ESTABLISHED. For months Soviet officials in eastern Siberia have been prepairng for the visit of the fleet. Depots have been established near the mouths of the rivers, that, of the Obi being at Novi, and the hides, furs and other products are being brought down to the depots on barges. In sorne instances the barg shipments are being made over a distance of 2,000 miles. An experimental voyage was made last year under Soviet auspices and according to Soviet officials proved the entire feasibility of making at least one expedition a season. It Is now planned to make the expedition a regular, yearly service. Actual organizations of the project is In the hands of the all-Russian co-operative scciety of London, which acts for the Russian gov

ernment. This organization has had full charge of purchascg for the ca"goes of the , ships already loaded.

and will also assume responsibility

for the disposition of the return

cargoes. The "Arcos," as the or

ganization is called, has made its

purchases In England, Germany and

Austria, some of the ploughs having come from Germany, but the greater part of the farm Implements

having been purchased in England. I'UOJECT OLD ONE Befo-e the overthrow of the czarist regime explorers and merchants had. repeatedly urged the feasibiT-y of establishing a trade route through the Kara Sea to Siberia, but the dangers of the route, combined with official red tape, prevented the carrying out of the plan. The chips which made the voyage la?t year encountered icebergs, snowstorms and for many days were compelled to plough their way through ice floes. As an aid to navigation the Soviet government has set up a series of wireless stations, which are expected to be used in directing the movements of the

ships and keeping In touch with them. There are four of these stations now In operation, according to reports, and the fleet at Archangel has been kept informed of weather and ice conditions.

But Mrs. Taylor sympathizes with tho prominct.imente tf the professors' wives that "the only economy which in timfi enables us to live on our salaries is for ua to have no babies." "It requires sacrifice to live adequately on my husband's pay," she said, "but it can be done. But when I look at my baby it was worth all the sacrifice !n the world." Mrs. Dorothy Hart Bruce, who prepared the exhaustive report which denounced condiflons under which university faculty families must live because of meager salaries, had not changed her mind one whit today aa a result of thj; storm of discussion which followed her article. "The professor's wife," she said, "must choose between childlessness on the one hi.nd and on the other, the anguish and humiliation of many years of debt; the never-light -tned burden of too geat physical labor; the inability to give her children the things which, she knows are important, the inevitable choking of Ikt intellectual and the artistic qualities."
