It uas with the feeling of sn adventurer that I timidly stepped out of my hotel after dinner. I expected to find deserted streets, In. fitead I found throngs. An armored uar, with rifles pointing and bristling from all sides, swept up tho Etreet. Somewhere In the distance I heard the crack of a rifle. I felt an atmosphere of war. The citizens of Dublin apparently felt perfectly s.ife, for t'aey went tappily on their way. Venturing further Into the heart of the city. I found Dublin a normal city, with a normal Saturday night. Toun? blue-eyed, rosy-cheeked girls wandered elmlessly up and down fhe streets, langiirs on the arms of b'awny Lotharios. Hcusewlves, burdened with Saturday night shopping, pushed their way through . the
crowds. loiterers gathered about the smoking gasflare of the inevitable faker. On a street corner a group of musicians entertained a crowd, and the clattering of pennies before them told of a freehearted people. Again In the distance there was the crackling of rifles. No one seemed to hear them except myself. Another and yet another armored car went shooting by. On all sides there were signs of war and the noise,? of war, but Dublin seemed not to care.
Dublin Is blase to the terrors of war. For years there lias been spasmodic war In Dublin, and the people are accustomed to war, hence they go about their business unmindful of lurking death or danger. Dublin Is worn and tired of war. despite the apparent carefree air of Its people. No normal city can withstand years of open and guerrilla warfare without tiring of it. In the faces of the people of Dublin, beneath their smiles, are the marks of a war-weary people. The Irish people are a kind, soft-spoken and gentle reople, whose nature Is in danger of being gradually warped by continuous warfare.
