MAGIC
GROWTH
OF CALUMET AVE IN TEN YEARS
Office Buildings, Department Stores, Banks, Theatres and Hotels. (From the Lake County Times, Oct. J2. 1933.) By HAROLD CROSS. Calument avenue business men at their weekly luncheon in thra gold .room on .the sixth floor of the Indiana hotel today passed a resolution urglngr the city to take steps immediately to annex the town of Griffith. Since the completion of the great railroad terminal at Griffith and the elevation of the railroads through Hammond three years ago. there has been a growing sentiment favoring the annexation of Griffith by Hammond. The fact that Griffith, with a population of 7.000. lias aspirations, to become a metropolis in Its own right has been over-shadowed by the fear that Its industrial expansion will intrude upon the residential suburbs of Hammond. It w3 a noticeable fact at today's mooting that some of the Calumet avenue busini-ss men who criticized -the city for its failure to annex Griffith have costly homes in th .exclusive residential districts that atie not far distant from Griffith's booming industrial territory. GRIFFITH MAX SPEAKS. ' J. K. Davis.' president of the Griffith chamber of commerce, was present and despite the almost unanimous opposition of the Calumet business men's association, made a spirited talk. "Beforo you gentlemen vote upon this resolution I have a few words to say," he began. "The chamber of commerce of Griffith does not believe that the city of Hammond is in good faith in desiring to annex our town. We would gladly consent to annexation if It were not for the fact that wc- are morally certain that the first official action of the city commissioners would be to pass ordinances to restrict our industrial development. "There was a day when Hammond welcomed :t new industry with open arms. There was a day when you men were, not so careful about where a new indurtry should be built.. . There was a time when you didn't have smoke ordinances. In fact you didn't gave a tinker's darn how much smoke swept across your homes. "When I came to Hammond in 1D23 Ju-st ten years ago it was cut vp by railroads and nobody ever complained of the smoke. The railroads hadn't begun to elevate then. In fact some of you gtntlemen didn't think they ever would, and electrification of the roads was thought to be a pipe, dream. "Now, It icemi that every resident of Hammond has the antinmoke mania. Since the railroads have been elevated and the electrification terminals established at Griffith you are as fussy as my dear old grandmother was when granddad spilled ashes on the parlor carpet. "Gentlemen, you didn't aland in tho rath of prog-ens ten years ago and you can't lo It today. I'm go-

ing to remind you or a few things that you may have forgotten. When came to Hammond ten years ago Calumet avenue had just started to develop. There wasn't a five-story building on the street. I was told that ten years before that, from Carroll street south to Conkey avenue, the land on each side of Calumet avenue was used to pasture cows. This beautiful hotel had never been dreamed of. In fact, if you had told anybody in town in 1923 that the city would support
an eight-story million dollar hotel
they would have laughed. Yet, as you all know, hundreds of tourists passing to and from Chicago stop at this hotel every week and hundreds of traveling men and others having business In this region make it their headquarters, even remaining here over Sunday rather than go to Chicago. "Ten years ago it was not thought possible that this city would support a half million dollar legitimate theater. Yet today, John Barrymore, America s greatest actor, is appearing in person at the Metropolitan theater, across the street from this hotel. Who thought then that Hammond could support a big time vaudeville house such as the Strand theater a block from here? "Are you satisfied because Calumet avenue Is built solid with office buildings, hotels, theaters, department stores, and smart shops from the river to Conkey avenue? Are you content to become reactionary because you have the great pay roll of the Jones & Laughlin steel mills and the other Industries of this reFion? Aren't you going to let Gdiffith have its chance to get factories and grow? CLAD TO AMALGAMATE. "Why, I remember when you were glad to amalgamate with the city of East Chicago and after that had been accomplished to take In Whiting without any thought of restricting their Industry. And here you are today afraid of a little smoke "Gentlemen, you have an opportunity to become the largest city In Indiana, surpassing Indianapolis. From a population of S3, 000 in 1923 you have grown to 173,000 more than double. We are willing to be annexed to this city glad of the
opportunity but we will never con. sent until you promise not to restrict our industrial development, until you agree that if our industry requires it you will sacrifice some of your resi Jential suburbs. "I appreciate what your southside residential district means to you. From Standard avenue tQ Dyer It is a series of parks, boulevards, playgrounds, schools and beautiful homes. It is there thaj you have made homes for the thouancls upon thousands of people wUo have come here during the past
ten jtars. But industry is essential to the maintenance of these
homes. I come to you representing the Chamber of Commerce of Griffith to ask that you use your good offices upon tlio members of the board of commissioners wfio govern this city to encourage and not stifle the industrial life of Griffith. rn that consideration on-y
will we willingly become annexed.'' i The business men's association j voted in. favor of the resolution to j annex Griffith but referred to com
