CALUMET AVE. HAS NEW RIVAL SINCE

COLUMBIA

REVIVED

Now that the actual construction of the Columbia avc. pavement has commenced, it behoves Calumet ave. property owners and merchants to bestir themselves. Columbia ave. will have the same kind of pavement as Calumet ave. two 15-foot strips of concrete with a 20-foot center. The contractors expect to finish the pavement from Standard ave .to Michlg-an ave. this fall and from Michigan ave. to Gost. lin st. in the spring-. There is little doubt but that the Jones & Laug-hlin steel plant will have one of Its main grates fronting on Columbia ave. at Gostlln st. and this will throw a great stream of traffic over that thoroughfare. Centered on Columbia ave. in East Hammond Is a population of several thousand people and at Standard ave. and Columbia, the new $300, 00u plant of the New York Car Wheel Co., has brought about a new development in business corners and residential property. But above everything- else, Columbia ave.'s greatest asset la the East Hammond Business Men's Association, of which Sam Skufakiss Is the president. That association has all the pep and fire of a gattllng gun. It is the Hvest thing in town. Look What it has already accomplished and wait. It won't be long until East Hammond will have a business section that will open the eyes of the town. Not that It hasn't a good business district now, but the association has only started. Calumet ave. would be surprised to see a modern offlc building on Columbia ave., wouldn't It? But do you know that back In the corner of his head, this smart Sam Skufakiss has the Idea to put up a tenstory modern office building at Columbia and Morton aves. and put East Hammond In the foreground as the new business district? Don't ever Imagine that the East Hammond Business Men's Association can't raise the money. They have connections with batiks in Hammond, South Chicago, East Chicago, Whiting, Pullman and Chicago that would surprise you. They can raise a million dollars as easy as any group of men In Hammond can raise It. Watch East Hammond and watch Columbia ave. There's a mighty lot of good red blood flowing In the veins of those fellows out there. Ten years ago East Hammond was In disgraceful condition. Today It la forging to the front and there Is no telling where It will stop. Remember It has first call on the payrolls of the standard Steel, the New York Car Wheel, the Hammond Malleable and will get lt share ef the Laughlln Steel.

In buying a home always Inspect the plumbing, a,y Joe itcOulre, the plumber. Many people can raise fish In the basement, because of defective plumbing, but at that, there are a lot of wet basement where the plumbing la In fine working order. "Not mine though my basement's dry both ways." The enterprising owner of th Calumet Avenue Pharmacy la perhaps one of the most consistent boosters of this new shopping district, and his business shows it, for he Is kept busy day and night, ao rapidly is new business developing. R. J. Herkner, who takes much pride in knowing he has weathered the pioneer days on the new great white way, and that he la still living to reap the fruits of a new trading center, says Calumet avenue, as a buslnees street, is a success. When ' chain stores, who are experts on location, can see it, the period of guessing has paused. A year ago B. F. Plants saw the prospect of a great business section

In Calumet avenue, so he gave up another good location. He located near the river, not to drown in case business goes to the bad, but because some time he expects to erect a building there. Izzy Levine, of Prosperity fame, who no doubt will make a real cleaning on Calumet avenue, takes considerable pride in the fact that he picked up a five hundred dollar bond ' on the sidewalk near his place of business recently at four o'clock in the afternoon and had located the owner before six o'clock the same evening. D. M. Hudson, discussing property valuation, stated yesterday that just a single coat of paint had been ; known to increase the worth of a building five hundred dollars. "Paint- . Ing helps much, especially if you are

going to sell, he said. The O'Neil Auto Sales reports a Jewett sedan to Matt Mother and Gelrge Girard. of Whiting, and to Arnold Keldenac and P. E. Orphey, of Hammond. "The future of Calumet avenue never looked brighter than it noes today," say the O'Neils. Dave Friedman, the tire man, is now concentrating his efforts on the Rufenacht tires. According to Dave this is one of the most popular tires throughout the east, and is Just now gaining a foothold In the west. The mileage is said to be very large.

set old age in man," says Manager Hobbs. of the Hobbs Garage on East Carroll street. "When old age creeps upon your automobile, a Zenith carburetor is the thing, and there's no monkey business about it, either," is the logic Hobbs brings out, and he' further states the Zenith will Increase the pep of twenty-five per cent. His ad elsewhere tells more about it.

William Vogt, proprietor of the East Side Garage, made a cleaning at the fair, when he sold the well advertised Johnstone cord tires guar anteed ten thousand miles, at a low introductory price. The large distribution carries important advertising value, he says. The Calumet Avenue Garage is now Introducing a semi-pneumatic tire that is resilient like pneumatics, puncture proof like solids and said to deliver the service of both, Truck and bus owners might well Investigate this new tire, if greater mileage Is desired. "You put in monkey glands to off-

Hammond motorists .are stirred te rebellion and open defiance by an

order promulgated through the police department enforcing a city ordinance making Truman 'boulevard a "boulevard stop at Calumet averiue and all other intersecting thorough, fares. "Silly" and "uncalled for" are some of the expressions voiced by automobile drivers who maintain that Calumet avenue traffic forced to atop at Truman boulevard, will be seriously hampered. They further assert that the stop order is dangerous. Chief Eunde has had signs painted on the Calumet avenue pavement warning both north and south bound traffic to stop. He says other and more easily discernible signs will be erected soon. Then the law will be enforced, he says. Violators will will be held' in contempt of a city ordinance and will be fined In the City court. "The Truman boulevard stop order Is but another halting spot In Calumet avenue now little more than a series of stops and starts due to railroad crossings and street car rules," said an Irate motorist.
