THE TIMES Fridar. October 6, 1922. Fires in United States rought Death to 15,000, Many More Were Injured iff..
Pazrc Ten.
According to a. constivative entlmate at leat 15,000 persons lost their lives in the United Sms last
year as the result of fires. Consid
erably more than this nyrpber were seriously injured from the same cause. 'When ws are told that most of those killed and injured were women and children, that they were sacrificed because of carelessness and 'that this toil is increasing each year, we realize that some definite etps should be takeji to halt the destruction. -' V; From a humane wtn.jn c'pt. therefore, if for po other, it is the duty i&f every sane person to ejreise ,i articular care to prevent fires, furthermore, it is his duty to know ihat to do when he discovers that jA Jlre has started, tony lives and "rvuch property wouibe saved an.'jiuajly if the person who first saw the'flre ha.3 known how to call Guickly for proper assistance. We ' lt realize that the first few minutes after the fire starts is the most Important time in which to fight it.
- Today fire alarm boxesare placed at convenient locations. 3.h e s e boxes are of little value unless the person needing to use them is acquainted Uj,. their location and the proper method of sounding an alarm. Although most alarm boxes are easy to operate, many persons have no idea how this should be done. Evaryftne should mai it his busyss to learn, the lgatiaa, of the nearest fire alarm box and ho..' to use it. He should further see that others of his family are acquainted with thegf fac,. It is advisable furthermore to impart tljis informatiji to all school children so that they fully understand what to do and how. Merchant, manufacturers and other bujpess organizations will fjnj it to their advantage to see that evej-y employe has this knowledge. It is impossibe to determine who will be called upon to sound the next alarm. All should be prepared. A further important consideration relative to the savins of lives is the
proper method of emptying a burning building of its occupants. "Where a large number of persons are assembled in one builJing such as a school, a public institution or a factory, it is advisable that fire drills be held. Arrangements should be made to conduct such drills at irregular intervals in order that the occupants will obtain the habit of answering the alarm whenever it is sounded. The frequtney of these tests will depend upon the type of building and the number of persons occupying it. Experience has shown that employes and school children become interested in fire drills. They are anxious to do their part in establishing a time record for emptying their building or department. The drill will acquaint everyone of the proper exit to be used and will also assure on orderly clearance In the case of an actual fire. The present week, which is being observed as Fire Treventlon "Week, presents an excellent oportunlty for teaching the use of the fire alarm box and for initiating fire drills.

To Read This: YOU are living in one of the biggest little cities in the United States. You know that, no doubt you will answerand you also say, "that you are proud of it." You will point to the fact that Whiting and Robertsdale combined have grown faster in the last five years than they did in the previous ten. That you are witnessing a tremendous building boom all of which makes your chest swell a little larger. YOUR district is grownig so fast though, that apparently you are overlooking a very important factor, and that is, AN APPRECIATION OF THE INCREASE IN VALUE THAT YOUR BUSINESS REAL ESTATE IS UNDERGOING. But your neighboring investor in Hammond, East , Chicago and Gary has not overlooked it though. He has stepped in and has reaped tens o f thousands of dollars of profits every cent of which should have gone to YOU. . . ;

Steps are now being taken to make it 1 00 feet wide. Cant yu ahead, say 5 or 1 0 years from now, and imagine just what a busy street it will be? YOU are going to make more money on business real etate in the next 5 or 10 years, than the present owners made in the last 15. WHY? Just look at the big building projects started in your West Park, Sheffield, and Water Gardens Additions and these people must have a place to shop. YOUR BUSINESS DISTRICT is so laid out that Indianapolis Blvd., will always be your main street. The profits that have been made in real estate on this street in the past few years would amaze you. But they are small as compared with what will be made in th future. Just read what Samuel Insull, President of The Commonwealth Edison Company has to say in "The Chicago Tribune" on October 4th. "In spending more than $38,000,000 in building and equipping the largest Power Plant in the world at 1 00th Street and the Calumet river, I belive that Chicago and its surrounding territory is having a great industrial boom, and that a greater one is to come. The industrial weight of the nation is gradually but inevitably shifting from the Atlantic coast to the territory West and South of Lake Michigan. In a relatively short time, this will be the industrial center of America."
