Davis, at Berlin, on file at the Department of Commerce. Amateur operator are few and far betwern. while radio telephony Is almost unknown science, except to engineers, research workers and professional operators. The German Post Office Dspartment, which Is in charge of all radio communication with the Republic, permits private companle and Individual to erect their own plants only on payment of a license fee. Ordinarily the department Itself Installs the plants; It also rents receiving sets for 2,500 marki per month. There is only one licensed broadcastingstation in Berlin at present, which sends out market and exchange quotations. Service charges range from 1,000 to 7,500 marks a month, to which mut be added the cost of a Government license and the Installation of a receiving set. Although the domestic demand Is light, numerous firms in and j about Berlin manufacture radio apparatus. Curiously, vacuum tubes ! are "almot unavailable," according to Vice-Consul Davis, crystal detectors being used instead.
